"The Convert" opened last night, April 19 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. The show, written by Danai Gurira and directed by Emily Mann in co-production with McCarter Theatre Center and the Goodman Theatre, is a world premiere production running through May 19. Danai Gurira, Wes Craven, Rutina Wesley, L. Music superstar Beyonce recenlty participated in a photo shoot with L’Officiel Paris in which she channeled Fela Anikulapo-Kuti- on whom the recent Broadway musical was based. Beyonce went as far as using blackface and tribal paint in the photoshoot, and the result has certainly sparked controversy. (more...)

Virginia Stage has announced that it will premiere a new musical by Grammy Award winner Bruce Hornsby, entitled SCKBSTD in early 2011. The project is set to feature Tony nominee Robert Cuccioli ad will be directed by Tony winner John Rando. The production is set to take place January 18 through February 6. (more...)

On January 2, Fela!, the multi-Tony Award-winning Broadway musical about the music and life of the revolutionary musician and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, ended it's run at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. Fela! may soon be headed to Nigeria, according to the New York Times. The move was originally reported in June, when it was announced that FELA! has been asked by officials at the Nigerian Ministry of Culture to perform in Nigeria in October. (more...)
