BWW Interview: An Evening of 'Short Stories' and a Song Book To Die For: THE ALL NIGHT STRUT
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - May 26, 2017

“The All Night Strut has a songbook to die for! It may not be as riotously funny as The Irish and How They Got Way was,” says Maine State Music Theatre's Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark, but I know from experience that the audience will leave the theatre exhilarated!” Clark, who will co-produce the show with Anita Stewart, Artistic Director of Portland Stage, describes the musical revue as “a collection of vignettes, each of which plays out before the next one begins. It is sort of like an evening of short stories that paints a colorful and poignant picture of 20th century America in the years of the Great Depression, World War II, and the post-war.”

Halloween has a reputation as one of the most alcohol-fueled days of the year, and issues aren't limited to just October 31. New data from 500,000 DUI offenders monitored 24/7 for drinking estimates that this year alcohol violations on the Saturday before Halloween will be 4 times higher than a typical weekend. BWW Review: Commedia dell'Arte Meets Political Farce at Portland Stage
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - May 2, 2016

Portland Stage closes its season with Dario Fo's 1974 play, They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay!, in the playwright's signature style of provocative socialist politics and broad Commedia dell'Arte farce. Translated from the Italian by Jon Laskin and Michael Aquilante, the Portland production adds an Americanized layer of iconic comedy characters and references to shows such as the Honeymooners. The overall effect alternates between moments of hilarity and wearisome intervals, though one can only admire the virtuoso performances of the entire cast and director Ron Botting's crisp, energetic production.

Portland Stage's gleeful, wickedly funny send-up of the Sherlock Holmes classic, Hound of the Baskervilles, as adapted by Steven Canny and John Nicholson, makes for a perfect antidote to the winter blues! Mounted with breathless energy by director Daniel Burson and brought to life by an agile, inventive, endearing trio of actors, this irreverent take on one of the best loved tales of the Holmes canon will keep you chuckling long after the curtain falls.

BWW Review: Portland Stage's DANCING AT LUGHNASA Plumbs Realm of Memory
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Oct 5, 2015

Portland Stage opened its 2015-2016 season with a thought-provoking production of Irish playwright Brian Friel's award-winning drama Dancing at Lughnasa, a wistful memory play about a matriarchal family in County Donegal in 1936. Commonly considered Friel's masterpiece, the drama examines the narrow, restricted lives of the Mundy sisters, constrained by poverty, unfulfilled dreams, and the conventions of Catholicism, as recounted by Michael, the 'love child' of one of the sisters, Christina, who tells the story from the dual perspective of a seven-year-old child and a grown man three decades later.

BWW Reviews: THE TAMING OF THE SHREW at Theater at Monmouth; These Talented Actors Cannot be Tamed
by Scott Moreau - Jul 13, 2013

Disguises, mistaken identity, lies that beget other lies; these are the calling cards of modern television sitcoms, and farce on stage. But these conventions have been around long before the likes of Ken Ludwig's brand of farce or the inception of the moving picture. Shakespeare's comedies have long been a source of inspiration for burgeoning playwrights and screenwriters. Though written centuries ago his comedy still rings true in theatres the world over, and The Theater at Monmouth's cast of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW presents a veritable masterclass of comedic acting.
