No matter what you do to a production of SOUTH PACIFIC, it is still going to have that unbelievably great Rodgers and Hammerstein score. Decades after SOUTH PACIFIC premiered on Broadway, won the Pulitzer, the Tony and just about every other award available for it to win and became the new long run champ, SOUTH PACIFIC still assaults our senses and perhaps our soul with SOME ENCHANTED EVENING, A COCKEYED OPTIMIST, THERE IS NOTHIN’ LIKE A DAME, BALI HA’I, I’M GONNA WASH THAT MAN RIGHT OUTA MY HAIR, A WONDERFUL GUY, YOUNGER THAN SPRINGTIME, HAPPY TALK, HONEY BUN, and YOU’VE GOT TO BE CAREFULLY TAUGHT, just to name the majority. Today in 2008, the first Broadway revival of South Pacific opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre, where it ran for 996 performances. South Pacific is a musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan. The musical centers on an American nurse stationed at a U.S. Naval base during World War II who falls in love with an expatriate French plantation owner but struggles to accept his mixed-race children. A second romance concerns a U.S. Lieutenant who falls in love with a young Asian woman. The musical premiered in 1949 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. (more...)

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre to Present BUS STOP, 4/12-4/29

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre (MCT) presents the classic romantic comedy BUS STOP by William Inge, April 12-29, 2012. The production will be a collaborative venture with the University of Wisconsin – Parkside (UWP) theatre department with at least 25 students and faculty serving as actors, designers and production personnel. There comes a moment late in the second act of South Pacific when Nellie Forbush (played by the luminous Katie Reid), after hearing the disembodied voice of Emile Debecque (the dashing Marcelo Guzzo) over a two-way radio relaying some heartbreaking news—and confirming to her that he has sacrificed all he holds dear in order to help Allied forces overcome Japanese forces—when she runs on the beach, beseeching Emile to “come back” so that she may admit her foolhardy response to him before he left on that heroic mission. She completes her heartrending plea for his safe return with a lovely reprise, however brief, of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s stunning “Some Enchanted Evening.” (more...)

Lapine, Reid and Company Bring Acclaimed Revival of SOUTH PACIFIC to TPAC This Week

With a score that features some of the most beloved songs from the Rodgers and Hammerstein catalogue and a book that some would argue was ahead of its time when the show debuted on Broadway in 1949, South Pacific represents a weighty undertaking for any theatrical troupe, whether on Broadway or on tour. And with the NETWorks tour headed to Nashville for an eight-performance run at Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s Andrew Jackson Hall, much of that responsibility falls to Katie Reid, who plays Ensign Nellie Forbush, and Sarna Lapine, who’s charged with recreating Bartlett Sher’s Tony Award-winning direction for the national tour.
