The Lied Center for Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has announced its 23nd season of world-class performing artists. The 2012-13 season includes 52 performances of 36 shows from a wide range of categories including Broadway, popular music, comedy, dance, classical music, world music and jazz, family offerings and theater. More than half of the 36 scheduled shows will make their first appearance at the Lied Center. See below for details. ( more...)

All-Male String Quartet WELL-STRUNG Makes Joe's Pub Debut, 5/1

One Direction step aside, there's a new kind of boy band on the circuit! The all male string quartet Well-Strung features classical musicians who sing putting their own spin on the music of Mozart, Vivaldi, Rihanna, Adele, and more. Directed by Donna Drake and starring Edmund Bagnell; first violin, Christopher Marchant: second violin, Daniel Shevlin; cello and Trevor Wadleigh; viola, the show debuts at Joe's Pub on Tuesday, May 1st at 7:30PM. Well-Strung was workshopped this past winter at Ars Nova and the group will be playing The Art House in Provincetown this July and August. ( more...)

Continuing its six year reign as the most popular and award-winning supper club of its kind in the greater Los Angeles area, dedicated to presenting the best of Broadway performers and nightclub artists dedicated to the Great American Songbook, Sterling’s Upstairs had its Grand Opening Sunday, April 1st at The Federal Bar and Restaurant in North Hollywood’s trendy NoHo Arts District. Sterling’s presented Bruce Kimmel’s Kritzerland production of Take Me Along: The Songs of Bob Merrill as its premiere offering. The six member cast starred musical theatre stars Julie Garnyé and Juliana Hansen, Broadway’s Melody Hollis and Kristofer McNeely, and musical theatre star Jeffrey Christopher Todd, with Special Guest... Broadway, film, TV, concert and recording star Lainie Kazan. Christy Crowel served as the evening’s Musical Director, with Shelly Markham serving as Musical Director for Lainie Kazan. Bruce Kimmel conceived, produced and directed Take Me Along, with Adryan Russ on board as Associate Producer. ( more...)

Varla Jean Merman Stars in THE MEDIUM at P-Town's Art House, 5/18-6/3

Varla Jean Merman aka Jeffery Roberson will play the title role in Menotti’s THE MEDIUM at The Art House directed by Donna Drake. Produced by Provincetown Counter Productions in association with Mark Cortale this production will run from May 18th – June 3rd. Elizabeth Hastings who has conducted for both New York City Opera and College Light Opera on Cape Cod will music direct. The cast also includes Stefanie Izzo as Monica, Edmund Bagnell as Toby, Shannon Carson as Mrs. Gobineau, Peter Kendall Clark as Mr. Gobineau and Maria Elena Armijo as Mrs. Nolan. This production is slated to transfer to the Marjorie S. Deane Little Theatre in NY for a limited engagement in the fall. After reigning since 2006 as the most critically acclaimed, award-winning supper club of its kind in the greater Los Angeles area, SterlingÂ’s Upstairs at VitelloÂ’s will close its doors in Studio City, CA on Sunday, March 18 following its final show headlined by Reba Buhr, co-star of DisneyÂ’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. Miss Buhr is also a host for the Disney ChannelÂ’s popular 365 television series. The announcement became official by producer Michael Sterling.

Now that the warm weather is setting in...I mean continuing...it might seem counter-intuitive to sit your kids down in a dark theatre in the middle of the afternoon. Buttrust me, by the time Spring break rolls around, you'll have seen one playgroundtoo many and both you and your kids will be hungry for something more. That'swhen it's time to take advantage of being in (or close to) New York City and take insome awesome family theatre. Here are my top picks for Spring 2012. I've carefullyselected shows that are geared towards younger kids but not 100% annoying toparents.
