BWW Reviews: Belmont's HAIRSPRAY is a Shiny, Sparkling Musical Theater Triumph
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 17, 2012

This spring’s sparkling, stellar production of Hairspray—the musical tale of one Tracy Turnblad, a “stout” girl who loves to dance and loves people no matter their shape, size, color or way of life—is as entertaining a production of the hit musical as you could ever hope to see. Led by a crazy talented bunch of youthful performers (if this were the 1930s, you can bet your bottom dollar they’d be requisitioning somebody’s barn for a colorful musical spectacle) who perform their collective heart out for enthusiastic audiences, the production is satisfying on every level. For one night only, Daryl Glenn & Jo Lynn Burks brought their entertaining musical satire of Robert Altman's movie "Nashville" to the cabaret stage usually inhabited by the American Songbooks most skilled performers, (Michael Feinstein & Lina Eder currently residing). BWW Reviews: Belmont University Musical Theatre's THE DROWSY CHAPERONE
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 27, 2011

Directed by David Shamburger, with musical direction by Jo Lynn Burks, The Drowsy Chaperone is an unmistakably top-flight production, performed with stylish glee by the cast of student actors who bring the "musical within a comedy" to such vibrantly mesmerizing life. Shamburger's focused direction and confident staging is seen throughout the production, which features the worky of six choreographers (Debbie Belue, Alyssa Maddox, Emily Tello, Emma Carpenter, Meghan Glogower and the director himself). That many choreographers could well lead to confusion (what's the old axiom about too many cooks spoiling the broth?) and a serious lack of onstage cohesion, but instead they come together on The Drowsy Chaperone to create a wonderfully danced musical comedy that flows seamlessly from one scene to the next.
