Theatre for a New Audience has announced details of its Spring Gala Celebrating Shakespeare’s Birthday, held in-person at Capitale (130 Bowery, New York City) and emceed by Isabel Arraiza.

TFANA has extended the run of Alice Childress’s Wedding Band, directed by Awoye Timpo, to May 22. (The production, which began previews April 28—postponed from an original date of April 23 due to two COVID-19 cases—was formerly set to close May 15).

TFANA (Jeffrey Horowitz, Founding Artistic Director) has cancelled the first four performances of its new production of Alice Childress’s Wedding Band, directed by Awoye Timpo, due to two COVID-19 cases discovered through TFANA’s routine testing of the company: April 23 at 7:30pm, April 24 at 7:30pm, and April 27 at 3pm and 7:30pm. The theater plans to begin previews on April 28 and to open on schedule on May 8.

TFANA presents William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, featuring John Douglas Thompson, directed by Arin Arbus, and co-produced with Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC; Simon Godwin, Artistic Director).

TFANA and Saint Flashlight present The Will of the City, poems inspired by playwright and poet William Shakespeare, launching today and running through the fall. Spotlighting the work of over a dozen writers, this activation will transform the streetside and outdoor screens at Polonsky Shakespeare Center (262 Ashland Place, Brooklyn, NY)—Theatre for a New Audience's home in Fort Greene—into a bi-weekly updated anthology of poems inspired by Shakespeare's plays.

Theatre for a New Audience will present a new virtual production of The Oresteia, the New York premiere of Ellen McLaughlin’s adaptation and translation of Aeschylus’ trilogy, featuring music composed by Kamala Sankaram, directed by Andrew Watkins (TFANA, as Assistant Director: The Winter's Tale, The Skin of Our Teeth, The Father, A Doll's House).

Theatre for a New Audience presents First Love, a theatricalization for Zoom of Samuel Beckett's short story of the same name, directed by six-time OBIE winner JoAnne Akalaitis and performed by Tony and Emmy Award nominee Bill Camp (Broadway: Death of a Salesman, The Crucible; TV: The Queen's Gambit, The Night Of). The creative team includes Eamonn Farrell (Video Design), Jennifer Tipton (Lighting Design) and Kaye Voyce (Scenic and Costume Design).

The authors and professors Scott Newstok, James Shapiro, Larry Miller and Emma Smith, Professor all have unique perspectives about Shakespeare for our world. They will come together for a free 45-minute, live-streamed conversation moderated by TFANA Founding Artistic Director Jeffrey Horowitz, followed by a 30-minute public Q&A.

Directed by Eno's frequent collaborator, the Obie and Lortel Award-Winner Oliver Butler (Eno's 2014 The Open House and the 2018 revival of Thom Paine (based on nothing), starring Michael C. Hall, both at Signature Theater, and 2019's The Plot at Yale Rep; Heidi Schreck's Tony Award-nominated What the Constitution Means to Me).

Theatre for a New Audience (TFANA, Jeffrey Horowitz, Founding Artistic Director) is pleased to announce a first and final extension of Fefu and Her Friends, one of the most beloved plays of the late, nine-time Obie Award-winning Cuban-American playwright and director María Irene Fornés, 'arguably the most influential American dramatist whose work hasn't become a staple of the mainstream repertoire' (LA Times). Lileana Blain-Cruz, winner of two Obie Awards (Suzan-Lori Parks' The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World and Jackie Sibblies Drury's Marys Seacole) stages the play in her TFANA directing debut, the first Off-Broadway revival of Fefu and Her Friends since American Place Theatre's 1978 staging. Fefu now plays on the Samuel H. Scripps Mainstage at TFANA's home, Polonsky Shakespeare Center (262 Ashland Place, Brooklyn), through December 12, 2019, with four performances added Tuesday, December 10 at 7:30pm, Wednesday, December 11 at 2pm and 7:30pm, Thursday, December 12 at 7:30pm.
