The Award-Winning Epic Theatre Ensemble, now in their 12th year presents William Shakespeare's RICHARD III: Born With Teeth, part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, a national program of the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The production, directed by Ron Russell, begins previews Off-Broadway on Tuesday, April 16th and opens Today, April 20th at 8:00 PM at the Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street). What happens when the squares of Seville meet the streets of New York? Find out tonight, April 26 when Carmen's Place (A Fantasy) opens at the Castillo Theatre on 42nd Street, running until June 16. Featuring some of opera's best-loved music as well as six original musical numbers, Carmen's Place (A Fantasy) is helmed by the 2012 AUDELCO Award winner for directing, Gabrielle L. Kurlander, whose production of Sally and Tom (The American Way) was a popular and critical success at Castillo last season. (more...)

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University has announced that three-time Emmy Award-winning actor Bryan Cranston will play the lead role of Lyndon Baines Johnson in Robert Schenkkan's new play All The Way opening the A.R.T.'s 2013-14 Season at the Loeb Drama Center. On March 3, 2013, Epic Theatre Ensemble held their Annual Gala, Remix: Mix It Up With Epic. The event was held at the McKittrick Hotel, home of Sleep No More. This year's honoree was Tony Award-Winning actor Richard Easton. Highlights of the evening included performances from high school students in Epic's Shakespeare Remix program (winner of the the 2009 National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award); the live fundraising auction with celebrity auctioneer Gordon Elliottand the funny and heartfelt tribute to Easton by Ethan Hawke and Aaron Krohn (currently appearing together Off-Broadway in Clive). The National Black Touring Circuit's Black History Month Play Festival 2013 will examine American history from anti-slavery Abolitionists to the emergence of the NAACP to the height of the civil rights movement through dramas on the lives of African American historic figures Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. LUZ-a new play by Catherine Filloux (DOG AND WOLF, LEMKIN'S HOUSE)-will be given its world-premiere production this fall, with previews beginning September 28 prior to an official press opening October 4 at La MaMa's First Floor Theatre (74A E. 4 St.) in Manhattan. LUZ is a Watson Arts Project, which presents original theater with a particular emphasis on women. LUZ is scheduled to run through October 14. (more...)

The 2:30 matinee performance of LUZ -- Catherine Filloux's new play about gender-based violence and human rights violations in different parts of the world -- will be followed by a discussion with members of the human rights community, including Kate Doyle of The National Security Archive and winner of the ALBA/Puffin Award for Human Rights Activism, along with Dr. Marcia Esparza, who has conducted research in areas including state violence, genocide and memory-silence in the aftermath of mass killings.
