Mark Okun and Hillary Brower Co-Write A SHORT JEW IN THE BODY OF A TALL W.A.S.P.

Blond-haired, blue-eyed Mark Okun knew from an early age that he was adopted, raised by short, European Jews. This new memoir details the exploits and struggles of a flamboyant and rebellious gay man whose good looks opened doors into a world of partying, drugs, sex, and rock and roll in the 1970s and '80s in New York City, Fire Island and Miami. As the AIDS epidemic hits, Okun uses the values instilled by his loving parents to find strength to survive. A decision to become sober and healthy eventually leads to a reunion with his biological family at age 42 on a television show. (more...)

Joe's Pub to Make Brooklyn Debut at Great GoogaMooga Festival, 5/17-19

Joe's Pub at The Public will make its debut in Brooklyn as a co-presenter at the second annual Great GoogaMooga Festival in Prospect Park. The three-day outdoor food, drink and music festival is produced by Superfly Presents and will take place Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19, 2013. The Joe's Pub Stage will host eight performances on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19. (more...)

Mommie Dearest Inc. in association with Producer Jerry Rosenberg have announced dates for the New York premiere of SURVIVING MOMMIE DEAREST an empowering and inspirational new production starring Christina Crawford - actress, activist and author of the 1978 best-selling autobiographical book 'Mommie Dearest.' The show features an award-winning bio-pic documentary covering 100 years of show-biz history and details the turbulent relationship between Christina and her movie legend adoptive mother, Joan Crawford. Complete with film clips and footage from forgotten 1940's home movies, SURVIVING MOMMIE DEAREST is slated for a limited run of 5 performances, during the week of Mother's Day and will run off-Broadway at the Snapple Theater Center in Manhattan. With a voice like whiskey and a laugh like pure joy, Janis Joplin took the music scene by storm. Simultaneously rough and vulnerable, Joplin was dubbed the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, proving music wasn't just a man's world anymore. Now, in a new musical event featuring more than a dozen singers and band members, playwright-director Randy Johnson creates 'a compelling portrait of an artist' (Culturemob) through the words, inspiration and music of one of America's greatest rock 'n' roll originals. One Night With Janis Joplin is a full-on concert experience and musical journey into the life and inspirations of one of rock 'n' roll's greatest legends and it runs in The Rep's Quadracci Powerhouse from tonight, May 3 - June 2, 2013 and opens on Monday, May 6, 2013. Packed with classic songs ('Piece Of My Heart,' 'Summertime,' 'Mercedes Benz'), One Night With Janis Joplin also shines the spotlight on trailblazers who influenced Janis - like Bessie Smith, Etta James and Aretha Franklin. Hailed by critics as a "feel-good, fist-pumping, must-see" show, One Night With Janis Joplin has left audiences clamoring for tickets in Portland, Cleveland and Washington, D.C. Pasadena Playhouse Kicks Off 3rd Annual High School Theatre Festival Today

The Pasadena Playhouse announced that the theatre would host the THIRD ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE FESTIVAL today, April 27, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The event will feature fifteen local high schools, each performing a theatrical piece of their selection. Admission to the Festival is $5.00 and all proceeds will go towards funding next year's High School Theatre Festival. This special, non-competitive, event was created so that all friends, family and supporters of the surrounding communities and the local schools may enjoy the talent of the participating students. This year's event will also feature surprise celebrity guest appearances. (more...)
