Folger Theatre to Stage SAINT JOAN

Folger Theatre concludes its 2017/18 season with a special engagement of George Bernard Shaw's epic portrait of Saint Joan, presented by the acclaimed New York-based Bedlam theater company. Saint Joan will be directed by Bedlam's Artistic Director Eric Tucker (the award-winning director of Sense and Sensibility at Folger Theatre) and features a cast of four, including Tucker, playing over 25 parts. Aundria Brown is the martyred heroine of France, Joan of Arc.

Folger Theatre continues its 2017/18 season with The Way of the World, a new comedy freely adapted from the classic play by William Congreve. Written and directed by renowned author Theresa Rebeck (Mauritus and Seminar and Broadway; creator and head writer of TV's Smash), the production will star Tony Award nominee Kristine Nielsen (Present Laughter, You Can't Take It With You, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike on Broadway).
Music of Hildegard to be Performed at National Cathedral

Folger Consort, the early music ensemble in residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library, performs two concerts of A Branch of Freshest Green: Music of Hildegard von Bingen, Friday, February 2 and Saturday, February 3, 2018 in the Gothic nave of Washington National Cathedral. Celebrating the legacy of Hildegard von Bingen, the program intersperses works by the great 12th-century visionary and composer with works by contemporary female composers arranged for medieval instruments and voices. Folger Consort artistic co-directors Robert Eisenstein and Christopher Kendall will be joined by the all-female vocal ensemble, Trio Eos, and multi-instrumentalists Shira Kammen and Christa Patton.

Folger Consort Announces Holiday Concert Featuring Seasonal Music of Germany

Folger Consort, the early music ensemble in residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library, performs eleven concerts of Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming: Seasonal Early Music of Germany, Friday, December 15 through December 23, 2017 in the festively decorated Elizabethan theater in the heart of Capitol Hill. Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the intimate program of seasonal German music from the Renaissance and early Baroque features the music of Praetorius, Sch tz, Schein, among others. Folger Consort artistic co-director Robert Eisenstein will be joined by the vocal ensemble in residence of Washington National Cathedral, Cathedra as well as viol consort Arcadia Viols, and acclaimed organist Adam Pearl.

Concluding its highly successful 2015/16 season, Folger Theatre stages the world premiere of District Merchants, a variation of Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice. Commissioned by Folger Theatre as part of the 2016 celebration of 400 years of Shakespeare and in tandem with the Folger exhibition America's Shakespeare, playwright Aaron Posner sets this new exploration of class and difference in our own political place of power, Washington, D.C., just after the Civil War.

The wonderfully inventive and wildly hilarious Reduced Shakespeare Company® (RSC) returns to Folger Theatre for the eagerly anticipated world premiere of William Shakespeare's Long Lost First Play (abridged). The RSC will bring their signature style (dubbed "intellectual vaudeville" by The New York Times) of witty wordplay and physical finesse to the Folger for a limited engagement from April 21 through May 8, 2016.
