Masterworks Theater Company presents A Midsummer Night's Dream, starring Nick Cearley (The Skivvies) as Puck, Becca Ballenger (Steel Magnolias) as Helena, Em Grosland (The Erlkings) as Flute, Sheria Irving (Broadway's Romeo And Juliet) as Hermia, Jenny Strassburg (Echoes of War) as Titania. A Midsummer Night's Dream is directed by Tamilla Woodard and began performances on June 5th, with an opening slated for tomorrow, June 11th at the 47th Street Theatre (304 West 47th Street). New Brew Performs Select Scenes From: The Curse of the Rat King: Trav S.D. (libretto) and David Mallamud (music) have been collaborating on this campy comic opera since 2010. It is a post-modern mash-up of Universal horror films, The Pied Piper of Hamelin, the operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, the writings of Sigmund Freud, and numerous other elements. On the bill with him will be selections from Three Way, by David Cote (libretto) and Robert Paterson (music), which has been described as “a kind of NC-17 Il trittico”, and two works with lyrics by UTC#61's Edward Einhorn: The Velvet Oratorio (music by Henry Akona) and Money Lab (music by Avner Finberg).

Theodora Skipitares to Bring THE CHAIRS to LaMama, 5/22-6/8

In Ionesco's absurdist masterpiece, 'The Chairs,' an elderly couple set out chairs for an audience to listen to a world-changing pronouncement from an orator who turns out to be a deaf-mute. Puppet theater maestro Theodora Skipitares wondered what would happen if the chairs themselves were world-changers. Her newest work, 'The Chairs,' presented by La MaMa E.T.C. May 22 to June 8, is a response to Ionesco, but that's where the similarity ends. Skipitares' chairs are incarnations of people like Malala, Stephen Hawking and Nelson Mandela and their messages are, well, not absurd.
