With a voice like whiskey and a laugh like pure joy, Janis Joplin took the music scene by storm. Simultaneously rough and vulnerable, Joplin was dubbed the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, proving music wasn't just a man's world anymore. Now, in a new musical event featuring more than a dozen singers and band members, playwright-director Randy Johnson creates 'a compelling portrait of an artist' (Culturemob) through the words, inspiration and music of one of America's greatest rock 'n' roll originals. One Night With Janis Joplin is a full-on concert experience and musical journey into the life and inspirations of one of rock 'n' roll's greatest legends and it runs in The Rep's Quadracci Powerhouse from May 3 - June 2, 2013 and opens on Monday, May 6, 2013. Casting has been announced for the upcoming national tour of Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT, the explosive Broadway hit called "wonderfully raucous" and "emotionally charged" by The New York Times and "flat-out electrifying" by the Boston Globe, which will make its Jacksonville premiere at the Times-Union Center's Moran Theater on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 14th -15th for two performances only. Today in 2010, American Idiot opened at the St. James Theatre, where it ran for 422 performances. American Idiot is a one-act, through-sung stage musical. The show is an adaptation of punk rock band Green Day's concept album of the same name. The story, expanded from that of the concept album, centers on three disaffected young men, Johnny, Will, and Tunny. Johnny and Tunny flee stifling suburbia and their parents' restrictions. American Idiot won two 2010 Tony Awards: Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Christine Jones, and Best Lighting Design of a Musical for Kevin Adams. It also received a nomination for Best Musical. On February 13, 2011, it won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. (more...)

Chris Milk is an accomplished artist, director, and photographer who has created music videos for Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Beck, Norah Jones, Jack White, U2, Gnarls Barkley, Green Day, and many more. On Friday, April 19, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., Milk will be the first artist to participate in the series Sonos and VEVO present: The Director's Studio, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Spectacle: The Music Video, currently on view at Museum of the Moving Image through June 16, 2013. Milk will show and discuss highlights from his work in an hour-long conversation, to be moderated by Chris Melcher (Melcher Media), founder of The Future of Storytelling Summit. (more...)
