American Players Theatre (APT) announces its 2012 Season, which will run June 9 to October 21, 2012. The season will be especially exciting to Shakespeare lovers, with the return of three Shakespeare productions in APT’s 1148-seat outdoor amphitheater Up the Hill, as well as Vern Thiessen’s Shakespeare’s Will, about William Shakespeare’s enigmatic wife Anne Hathaway, in APT’s 200-seat indoor Touchstone Theatre. Today in 1955, Silk Stockings opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 478 performances. Silk Stockings is a musical with a book by George S. Kaufman, Leueen MacGrath, and Abe Burrows and music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The musical is loosely based on the Melchior Lengyel story Ninotchka and the 1939 film adaptation it inspired. It ran on Broadway in 1955. This was the last musical that Porter wrote for the stage. (more...)

Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, the first New York City Center Encores! production of the season, plays its final performance today at New York City Center, and features Colin Donnell, Celia Keenan-Bolger, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Elizabeth Stanley, Betsy Wolfe and Adam Grupper. Casting has been completed for New York City Center’s upcoming Encores! production of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, the first New York City Center Encores! production of the season. Merrily We Roll Along, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth, will be directed by James Lapine with music direction by Rob Berman and musical staging by Dan Knechtges. Merrily has been extended for a two-week run and will play for 15 performances, February 8–19, 2012, at New York City Center, 55th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. (more...)

19 cast members of the original 1981 Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, including leading actors Lonny Price, Ann Morrison and Jim Walton, were reunited at New York City Center for a reception and performance of the City Center Encores! production on Tuesday, February 14. It was an event we would not have missed and BroadwayWorld has been bringing you photos and video highlights of the event throughout the week. This morning, we take you inside the opening night reception and joyful curtain call, during which both companies joined in for a chorus of "Old Friends" along with Stephen Sondheim himself.
