LUCKY GUY Recoups; Becomes Highest Grossing Play in Broadway History

LUCKY GUY, starring two-time Academy Award-winner and Tony Award nominee Tom Hanks, officially recouped its $3.6 million capitalization costs as of the week ending 4/28/13, eight weeks after beginning performances. The world premiere production of Nora Ephron's final work, which this week was nominated for six Tony Awards including Best Play, has also broken a record three times as the highest grossing play in Broadway history. Sundance Selects Picks Up ELAINE STRITCH: SHOOT ME

Sundance Selects announced today that the company is acquiring North American rights to Chiemi Karasawa's directorial debut ELAINE STRITCH: SHOOT ME, a feature documentary about the stage and screen icon that made its world premiere last week at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. The film was produced by Karasawa and Elizabeth Hemmerdinger, and executive produced by Alec Baldwin and Cheryl Wiesenfeld. (more...)

Mortar Theatre Company Presents SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND, 5/6-6/8

Mortar Theatre Company will present the world premiere of Seek and Ye Shall Findwritten and performed by Sentell Harper**. The one-man show, directed by Stephanie Stroud*, is performed at the Apollo Theater Studio, 2540 N. Lincoln Avenue, May 6 - June 8. Opening/Press night is Monday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. The performances run on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 3 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m. There will be no performances on Sunday May 26 and Monday 27 in observance of Memorial Day weekend. Instead, there will be a 7:30pm performance on Tuesday May 28. Tickets go on sale Monday, April 29. Ticket prices are $15 for general admission, $10 for students, and $10 for groups and may be purchased at MortarTheatreCompany.org or at the Apollo Theater box office at 773.935.6100. (more...)

Nora Ephron's last written work, Lucky Guy, will be featured in the upcoming collection The Most of Nora Ephron, scheduled to be published by Knopf October 29 ($35.00). The book will only be available as a hardcover. The collection, edited and introduced by Robert Gottlieb, marks the first time Ephron's work as a journalist, essayist, novelist, screenwriter, playwright, sometimes cook and blogger has been published in one volume. Lucky Guy, which opened April 1 to critical acclaim at the Broadhurst Theatre (235 West 44th Street), is the final work by three-time Academy Award-nominee Nora Ephron and directed by two-time Tony Award-winner George C. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 4/13- THE WILD PARTY

Today in 2000, The Wild Party opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre), where it ran for 68 performances. The Wild Party is a musical with a book by Michael John LaChiusa and George C. Wolfe and music and lyrics by LaChiusa. It is based on the 1928 Joseph Moncure March narrative poem of the same name. The Broadway production coincidentally opened during the same theatrical season (1999-2000) as an off-Broadway musical with the same title and source material. Its plot centers on a party - fueled by bathtub gin, cocaine, and uninhibited sexual behavior - hosted by Queenie and Burrs, whose relationship is disintegrating. The cast included Toni Collette (making her Broadway debut) as Queenie, Mandy Patinkin as Burrs, and Yancey Arias as Black. (more...)
