Today in 1955, Finian's Rainbow opened at City Center, where it ran for 15 performances. Finian's Rainbow is a musical with a book by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy, lyrics by Harburg, and music by Burton Lane. The 1947 Broadway production ran for 725 performances. Finian moves to the southern United States (the fictional state of Missitucky is a humorous combination of Mississippi and Kentucky) from Ireland with his daughter Sharon, to bury a stolen pot of gold near Fort Knox, in the mistaken belief that it will grow. A leprechaun follows them, desperate to recover his treasure before the loss of it turns him permanently human. Complications arise when a bigoted and corrupt U.S. Senator gets involved, and when wishes are made inadvertently over the hidden crock. (more...)

The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) has announced the full slate of 27 musical productions, a developmental reading series and special events for their seventh annual festival. The PS Classics cast recording of the Broadway revival of Finian's Rainbow was released in stores Tuesday, February 2. To celebrate the CD release, Finian's Rainbow stars Kate Baldwin, Cheyenne Jackson, Christopher Fitzgerald, Jim Norton, Brian Reddy, Terri White and Guy Davis hosted a CD signing for fans. The event featured special, encore performances by Cheyenne Jackson, Kate Baldwin, and Christopher Fitzgerald. BroadwayWorld was there to capture it all. (more...)

Cast members from Broadway's recent FINIAN'S RAINBOW will be on hand at the Lincoln Center Barnes and Noble at Lincoln Center on February 1st, 5pm for the release of the revival cast recording. The cast will perform and sign copies of the CD, which fans will be able to purchase a day earlier than its February 2nd release date. (more...)

Finian's Rainbow began previews at Broadway's ST. James Theatre, 246 West 44 Street, on Thursday, October 8, and opened on Thursday, October 29. The production will have played 22 previews and 92 performances. The show's cast recording will be released on February 2 on PS Classics. (more...)

Cast members have confirmed and Michael Riedel in the New York Post is reporting as well that although options to transfer Finian's Rainbow to a smaller theatre (the Neil Simon presumably) in a scaled down production had been discussed, ultimately it was deemed economically unfeasible and the show will still close as originally announced on January 17th. The Theater for the New City and The Harlem Repertory Theatre will present a modern adaptation of "Flahooley" by E.Y. Harburg, Fred Saidy and Sammy Fain, to be staged from December 18 to January 3 at the Theatre for the New City. This classic musical tells of a misbegotten toymaker during the McCarthy madness.
