Ballet Hispanico Inaugurates Rockefeller Brothers Fund First Dance Residency at The Pocantico Center by BWW News Desk - May 06, 2013
Ballet Hispanico, recognized as the nation's leading Latino dance organization since 1970, announces its participation as the inaugural company in the Rockefeller Brothers Fund's (RBF) first dance residency as part of the Pocantico Arts Collaborative this spring. Ballet Hispanico, one of two dance companies awarded the RBF's Charles E. Culpeper Arts and Culture Grant, will develop a new choreographic work as part of its residency program at The Pocantico Center. A work-in-progress showing will follow this summer as part of Pocantico's summer performance season. (more...)

Creative director Eduardo Vilaro succeeded admirably in capturing the spirit and vivacity of the Latino spirit. Chicago Opera Theater's Chicago Stage Premiere production of Astor Piazzolla's MARÍA DE BUENOS AIRES evokes Argentina's 'Dirty War', the period between 1976 and 1983 when the country was governed by military juntas which controlled the populace through state-sponsored terrorism. This 'tango operita' is of stunning originality, pulsing to the passion and beat of Astor Piazzolla's revolutionary 'nuevo tango' and Horacio Ferrer's mesmerizing, imaginative poetry. Chicago Opera Theater's production is a collaboration with Chicago's Luna Negra Dance Theater at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph Drive, and runs for four performances only: Saturday, April 20; Wednesday, April 24; Friday, April 26; and Today, April 28. (more...)

Jorge Solis, Board President for Luna Negra Dance Theater, Chicago's only contemporary dance company devoted to the Latino choreographic voice, announces today that Esther Jeles has been named as Luna Negra's new Executive Director, effective immediately. Jeles, 51, has been a business consultant for 19 years and has worked throughout North America as an executive coach, workshop leader and professional speaker. Jeles replaces Joanna Naftali, who left Luna Negra at the close of 2012 to pursue other career opportunities. (more...)
