Walnut Street Theatre concludes its landmark 203rd season with an all-new production of Broadway’s BUDDY: THE Buddy Holly STORY. Directed and choreographed by Casey Hushion, the show began previews on May 15th and opens on May 23rd, running through July 15th on the WST Mainstage. Christopher Sutton (Buddy), says this is the first time in the history of the Walnut Street Theatre that the same actor has played the same role twice. Ever since she replaced Diane Keaton in Hair, becoming the first African-American woman to replace a white actress on Broadway, Melba Moore has been a star. From her Tony Award-winning performance in Purlie to co-starring with Eartha Kitt in Timbuktu to playing Fantine in Les Misérables, she has been an audience favorite along the Great White Way. A regular on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Ms. Moore headlined her own variety show on CBS, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist, was the first female pop artist to do a non-operatic solo concert at New York City’s Metropolitan Opera House and even had two #1 hit singles on Billboard. Song stylist and performance artist Kim Smith is a truly unique performer who brings together the worlds of cabaret and theatre in a wholly idiosyncratic and arrestingly amusing manner. Part Marlene Dietrich, part Eartha Kitt and all Kim Smith, Kim and I recently had the chance to discuss his solo show, MISFIT - what inspired it; what he will be singing; what we can expect from the show - as well as a host of other topics, such as his Australian upbringing, the music and performers who inspire him most, performing in Sondheim’s MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG and other musicals, as well as other collaborations with director Christian Coulson. Plus, Smith and I take an overview of his favorite current pop artists - many of whom he pays tribute to in his shows, such as Bjork and Robyn - and what elements draw him most in creating his series of surreal solo shows, the most recent being the highly regarded MISFIT, which returns to New York this Sunday. Chris Durang launched a comic nightclub act in 1989 called CHRIS DURANG & DAWNE (John Augustine and Sherry Anderson) that came back to play clubs all over the New York area for the next eight years until they made their last public performance in January of 1996. (more...)
