Nashville Shakespeare Festival Celebrates Shakespeare's Birthday, 4/22

Calling all would-be Romeos and Juliets to Centennial Park Sunday, April 22, for the Nashville Shakespeare Festival's celebration of William Shakespeare's 448th birthday. For the third year in a row, Denice Hicks, the festival's executive artistic director, will stage the “Biggest Balcony Scene Ever” at Centennial Park. The party starts at 3 p.m. at the park's bandshell. (more...)

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic fare and, after the completion of the balcony scene, to stay on for free family entertainment from various local performers. When Patty Duke played the role of Helen Keller in the Broadway premiere of William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker, she was ten years old, and when Madeleine Hall took the stage of the Franklin Theatre on Thursday night in the opening of Studio Tenn’s exquisitely crafted revival of the modern American theater classic, she too was ten years old. And it should be noted that as portentous as Duke’s debut came to be known, theater lovers still to come may very well consider Madeleine Hall’s beautifully crafted performance just as revelatory and just as noteworthy. After that huge success, BroadwayWorld.com announces two awards presentations for Tennessee theater this year, with awards to be presented for Nashville productions and for Tennessee productions outside Music City USA. You may make nominations throughout the month of October, with voting for the awards starting in November, and the announcement of winners set for Sunday, January 8, during Midwinter's First Night at The Keeton Theatre in Donelson.
