NYU Tisch To Honor Filmmakers Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus At 2018 Gala

NYU Tisch School of the Arts today announced it will honor notable alumni Academy Award nominated producer, director and screenwriter Chris Columbus ('80) and filmmaker Eleanor Columbus ('11) at its 2018 gala. The annual event will be held on Monday, April 16, 2018, at Capitale."Chris and Eleanor Columbus represent a unique father-daughter partnership, both influenced by their time at the Tisch School of the Arts, and now influencing one another as they create, promote, and support fresh and exciting work," said Allyson Green, Dean, NYU Tisch School of the Arts. "This is the first time we've honored a father-daughter duo at the Tisch Gala, and we are thrilled. Together, Chris and Eleanor understand the importance of supporting and celebrating the next generation of storytellers, both through Maiden Voyage Pictures and also through their support of scholarships and production awards at Tisch."
Academy Boosts Diversity: 2018 Oscar Nominations More Diverse Than Ever Before

According to the Hollywood Reporter the 2018 Academy Awards nominations, for director especially, are much more diverse than recent years. Announced earlier this week, nominees for the 90th Annual Academy Awards include actors of color in major acting categories along with men of color and a woman nominated for directing. The #OscarsSoWhite hashtag which was trending throughout the last several years has not seen a major comeback this year. This step towards a more diverse Awards Show occurs after The Academy of of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences faced backlash for nominating all white actors in leading acting categories 2016 and 2015.

The Writers Guild of America, East and the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting during 2017. Sixteen emerging screenwriters will come together at Sundance Institute's 2018 Screenwriters Lab, an immersive five-day writers' workshop announced today and taking place at the Sundance Resort in Utah, January 12-17, 2018. The Lab brings independent screenwriters together with accomplished writers, in an environment that encourages the art and craft of writing and creative risk-taking. Through one-on-one story sessions with Creative Advisors, Fellows work intensively on their feature film scripts and engage in an artistically rigorous process that offers them indispensable lessons in craft. The Lab is the first step in a year-round CONTINUUM of customized creative and tactical support for each project and team.
