West Coast Premiere of THE BEAUX STRATAGEM Begins 4/6 at A Noise Within
by Kelsey Denette - Mar 14, 2013

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, concludes its 21st season with the West Coast premiere of GEORGE FARQUHAR'S THE BEAUX' STRATAGEM, a hilarious period yet contemporary "buddy road trip" filled with eccentric characters adapted by THORNTON WILDER and KEN LUDWIG, opening Saturday, April 6 and closing Sunday, May 26, 2013 (previews begin Saturday, March 30). Set in the early 1700's in the English countryside, two girl-crazy young adventures are on the road-trip of their lives when, out of the blue, they find themselves hopelessly in love. Co-Producing Artistic Director Julia Rodriguez-Elliott directs the play, which is the remarkable creation of three playwrights working in three different centuries. Described as "sheer laugh-out-loud fun" (The Free Lance-Star), the play "glides confidently from silly to wry, from the pratfall to the riposte" (The Washington Post) and is "a delightful romp that seamlessly reaches across the centuries to combine the old with the new" (Theater Mania). The run includes a 'Pay What You Can" date on Thursday, April 4.

A Noise Within Presents THE GRAPES OF WRATH, Opening 2/23
by Kelsey Denette - Jan 25, 2013

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, presents FRANK GALATI'S adaptation of JOHN STEINBECK'S iconic THE GRAPES OF WRATH, opening Saturday, February 23 and closing Saturday, May 11, 2013 (previews begin Saturday, February 16), which brilliantly distills the quintessential American novel to its core while preserving its essence as perhaps the greatest American travel tale ever written. Directed by Michael Michetti, this timely work, filled with heartbreak and strength, features Steinbeck's words almost exclusively as well as deeply evocative music that includes period hymns, Dust Bowl songs and original music by Michael Smith written for the play's original 1988 Steppenwolf Theatre Company production, hailed by the London Daily Mail as "shatteringly perfect." The Chicago Sun-Times praised Frank Galati's adaptation as "utterly faithful to its source - that it is not only uncompromising, but devoid of sentimentality, and that it is flawless in the way it sweeps us into the lives of the characters, and their time, without a wasted word or motion." The run includes a 'Pay What You Can" date on Thursday, February 21.

A Noise Within Announces TOBACCO ROAD Reading, 1/8
by Kelsey Denette - Dec 21, 2012

A Noise Within (ANW), the acclaimed classical repertory theatre company, offers a free, one-night-only reading of JACK KIRKLAND's powerful drama TOBACCO ROAD on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, 7 pm, in its new state-of-the-art Pasadena theatre. Directed by Apollo Dukakis and featuring A Noise Within resident artists, this Depression-Era Broadway blockbuster, which exposes the South's social and racial injustices with biting satirical humor, portrays an ignorant, dysfunctional and hardscrabble family of Georgia sharecroppers whose spirits are as depleted as the soil in which they toil. Family patriarch Jeeter Lester and his clan are caught up in the excesses of evangelism and the dark side of lust as they strive just to survive the devastation of poverty. Tobacco Road, based on the novel by Erskine Caldwell, holds the record as the second longest running non-musical in Broadway history.
