Asphalt Orchestra to Play THE PIXIES: SURFER ROSA, 7/28 by BWW News Desk - Jun 17, 2013
Bang on a Can's radical marching band Asphalt Orchestrareturns to Lincoln Center Out of Doors to give the world premiere of Asphalt Orchestra Plays the Pixies: Surfer Rosa, commissioned by Lincoln Center and honoring the groundbreaking album's 25th anniversary, on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at 6:30pm at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park Bandshell. Parade sets by Asphalt Orchestra and Jacob Garchik's The Heavens start at 6 pm on Josie Robertson Plaza and Hearst Plaza. The program also includes performances by the Kronos Quartet with special guests Dan Deacon and Jherek Bischoff, as part of a weeklong celebration, KRONOS at 40, co-curated by Lincoln Center and Kronos Quartet. New York Live Arts Announces 2013-2014 Season, Feat. Over 40 Artists by BWW News Desk - May 24, 2013
Bill T. Jones, Executive Artistic Director, and Carla Peterson, Artistic Director, of New York Live Arts today announced the presenting season for 2013-2014. The season runs from September 23, 2013 through May 31, 2014 and includes more than 100 performances and events by more than 40 featured artists. Season highlights include ten world premieres, eight international productions, the Replay Series, Studio Series, Fresh Tracks Performance and Residency Program, visual art and humanities programming in the Ford Foundation Live Gallery, and more. 15th Annual Labapalooza! Returns to St. Ann's Warehouse, May 23—26 by BWW News Desk - May 15, 2013
The Puppet Lab, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary, is St. Ann's Warehouse's experimental haven for artists developing interdisciplinary projects for puppet and object theater. Under the direction of Lab Directors Matthew Acheson and Krissy Smith, participating artists and their collaborators have met weekly over several months to develop projects, share puppetry elements and other design and technical ideas, discuss plot structure and character development, and work on narrative. They will present their works in the annual Labapalooza! festival, which will run May 23 - 26 at St. Ann's Warehouse. (more...)

Soho Rep welcomes celebrated stage and screen actor Larry Pine in the world premiere production of Lucas Hnath's adrenaline-charged odyssey A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay About the Death of Walt Disney. Directed by Soho Rep Artistic Director Sarah Benson, Pine will play the title character - the man who forever changed the American Dream. Hnath's fictional play centers around the reading of a screenplay Walt Disney has written about his last days on earth. The script is about a city he is going to build that is going to change the world; about his brother; about everyone who loves Disney and how sad they are going to be when he is gone. (more...)

One of the nation's leading programs for emerging playwrights -- Cherry Lane Theatre's award-winning MENTOR PROJECT -- celebrates its 15th anniversary this season with the production of four new plays by emerging writers -- each of whom is paired with an accomplished mentor playwright -- from February 20, 2012 to April 13 at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce St.) in Manhattan. MENTOR PROJECT is the recipient of the Ross Wetzsteon Obie Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Development of New Work, along with the 2009 James Kirkwood Award for fostering and promoting the work of contemporary American playwrights. St. Ann's Warehouse welcomes back Kneehigh and director Emma Rice for the New York premiere of The Wild Bride. In this adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale 'The Girl Without Hands,' narrated by Satan himself, a father accidentally sells his daughter to the Devil. When our heroine cleverly escapes, a lyrical love story laced with devilish humor unfolds. The production features a bluegrass score by longtime Kneehigh composer Stu Barker, performed by live musicians and the cast. (more...)
