SPIDER-MAN Swings Off Broadway, Part Two: The Previews - Delays, Departures & Injuries

Today's edition of 'SPIDER-MAN Swings Off Broadway' features Spidey's time in previews, recalling the show's journey from its first performance in November 2010, until the revamped edition opened on Broadway 183 previews Later. From late 2010 through June 2011, all eyes were on the Foxwoods, as numerous actors sustained severe injuries, and on-and-offstage drama between the creative team and producers emerged, eventually forcing visionary Julie Taymor to walk away, and leave SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK in the hands of others.

Christopher Tierney & Louis Butelli Will Now Star in Jon Fosse's I AM THE WIND at 59E59 Theaters

Actors Christopher Tierney (in his first NYC stage role since departing Broadway's Spider-Man) and Louis Butelli (Cyclops: A Rock Opera; Sleep No More) step into Jon Fosse's I AM THE WIND, replacing the previously announced James Patrick Nelson and Jonathan Tindle. Performances still begin on Thursday, January 9 for a limited engagement through Sunday, January 26. Press opening remains Thursday, January 16 at 7:30 PM. The performance schedule is Tuesday - Thursday at 7:30 PM; Friday - Saturday at 8:30 PM; and Sunday at 3:30 PM. Performances are at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues). Tickets are $18 ($12.60 for 59E59 Members). SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark is now in its 2nd smash year on Broadway, and has been seen by more than 1 million audience members from around the world. It features music and lyrics by 22-time Grammy Award-winners Bono and The Edge, direction by Philip William McKinley (The Boy From Oz), and a book co-written by Julie Taymor, Glen Berger(Underneath The Lintel) and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Fantastic Four and Spider-Man comics, 'Big Love'). Just yesterday, Reeve Carney and the ensemble Spider-Men signed copies of their 2013-2014 Calendar in the lobby of the Foxwoods Theatre. Net proceeds from the calendar will go to Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS. Check out photos from the event below!

The 14-month calendar made its debut during a segment featuring Reeve Carney ("Peter Parker") and the performers on ABC's "Good Morning America" this morning, November 15 at 8:30 am EST. SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark showcased an unprecedented event with Times Square Alliance when they dropped the New Year's Eve ball 30 feet before midnight on New Year's Eve, marking the first time in history the ball has descended before midnight. In an exciting segment shown live in Times Square and on CNN, Spider-Man came to the rescue when The Green Goblin took host Anderson Cooper captive. After the Goblin threatened to drop the ball early to ruin New Year's Eve, Spider-Man raised it back to its original position and stood triumphantly on top of One Times Square. Lead producer Michael Cohl said last week that Tierney has been cleared to rejoin the show and hopes to be swinging over the audience again on opening night June 14.

As BroadwayWorld reported last night, according to the NY Times, the Broadway run of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark was rumored to be postponed once again; this time, because of safety issues. inspectors from The New York Department of Labor visited the Foxwoods Theatre to take a look at the flying devices and methods being used. Because they saw only some of the dozens of aerial stunts in the show, delays in the opening are likely. If the Department of Labor approves of the rest of the stunts in the next 10 days, then performances will begin on November 14.

Michael Riedel reported in this morning's New York Post that SPIDER-MAN's Kevin Aubin, one of several performs said to be appearing in a SPIDER-MAN outfit had broken both of his wrists during a small presentation for ticket brokers and group sales agents last week.
