Photo Flash: Rachel York & Graham Rowat in Barrington Stage Company's THE GAME
by Stephen Sorokoff - Aug 18, 2011
The roads connecting the Upper West Side to the Berkshires have been well traveled by Julianne Boyd. As the artistic director & founder of the Barrington Stage Co. she has always presented "Broadway caliber" works as well as new and experimental productions to her ever growing Berkshire audiences. It has also been a "two way road" with Barrington sending back to Broadway some pretty impressive BSC productions. THE GAME starring Drama Desk winner Rachel York & Graham Rowat may be the next one to travel that road (along with the just completed sold out run of Mark St. Germain;s "The Best of Enemies). Photo Flash: Music Theatre Wichita's SUNSET BOULEVARD
by BWW News Desk - Jul 07, 2011
Music Theatre of Wichita will celebrate its Fabulous Fortieth Season with Sunset Boulevard, July 6 - 10. Sunset Boulevard is the haunting musical drama that Andrew Lloyd Webber created out of the 1950 film noir classic. Silent film star Norma Desmond reclusively lives forgotten in her opulent Hollywood mansion, until struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis stumbles into her web. "You're Norma Desmond," he realizes. "You used to be big!" ... prompting her famous response, "I AM big. It's the pictures that got small!" Two of Norma's ballads, "With One Look" and "As If We Never Said Goodbye," became popular hits, but the whole score is terrific. Mark Madama is directing this one, too, with spectacular new sets by J Branson. ( more...)

BWW Reviews: WICKED at the Fox Theatre Through 7/11
by BWW
News Desk - Jul 12, 2010
The production of WICKED that's currently playing the Fox Theatre delivers an enchanting experience to its audiences that dazzles and delights, filling the stage with jaw-dropping scenery and incredible special effects, as well as a host of wonderful performers. The plot based on Gregory Maguire's novel gives a back story to L. Frank's Baum's beloved Wizard of Oz, that is unexpectedly infused with a strong, positive message about accepting people for who they are inside And, while most musicals are guilty of utilizing a threadbare plot to hang a multitude of songs upon, this is not the case with Wicked, where the reverse is nearly true, with Winnie Holzman's clever adaptation providing a more than sturdy framework for Stephen Schwartz's catchy score.
