I wanted to like you. In fact, I was fairly convinced I was going to love you. Truly. After I was given the complimentary audience glo-stick, told that my seat was directly under the large disco ball, and instructed to keep my arms and legs away from the stage to avoid collision with the roller skating chaos, I quickly fell into theater "true love." Signature Theatre closes out its 2011/12 season sporting funky legwarmers and wielding neon glow sticks with the Washington premiere of the musical comedy hit Xanadu. Beginning performances on May 6th, Xanadu will be transforming Signature’s MAX Theatre into one big disco-ball heaven – complete with satin shorts and roller skates! Nominated for four Tony Awards® (including “Best Musical”), the musical features a Book by Douglas Carter Beane, with Music and Lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. On February 13, New York Theatre Barn will present NYTB in the D-Lounge, a monthly concert for emerging musical theatre writers, now in its 5th year, at the Daryl Roth Theatre. The February 2012 installment of NYTB in the D-Lounge introduces to New York audiences Illinois-native, singer-songwriter Kevin Fogarty, who will present selections from his full-length musicals, and showcases Jonathan Larson Award-winner J. Oconer Navarro, who will present the world premiere of songs from two new musicals by himself and collaborators. Performers include Charlie Brady, Joaquina Kalukango, Zonya Love, and more. Executive Producers for NYTB in the D-Lounge are Laura Brandel and Jason Najjoum. (more...)

Following a successful 23rd Annual Festival of New Musicals held in NYC Oct. 27-28. The National Alliance for Musical Theatre held a party at Southern Hospitality. This year's Festival attaracted over 650 people representing 300 organizations from around the country including Europe attending the eight new musicals that were presented. The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company opened the world premiere of Saint-Ex, a dazzling new musical about the life of author/aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (The Little Prince) last week, but because of flooding from Hurrican Irene, the production has been temporarily shut down. The theatre's website states: "The Weston Playhouse has sustained damage from 5 feet of water which flooded the ground floor. ? The Theatre Company is formulating plans to reopen its production of Saint-Ex." (more...)
