Up on the Marquee: FIRST DATE

Tony Award-winning producer Junkyard Dog Productions (Memphis) has just announced that leading man Zachary Levi, star of TV's 'Chuck,' Disney's feature film Tangled and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World, will make his Broadway debut starring opposite Broadway and television ingenue Krysta Rodriguez ('Smash,' The Addams Family) in First Date, Broadway's new romantic musical comedy. With a book by Austin Winsberg ('Gossip Girl'), music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (Secondhand Lions, Twice Charmed) and musical staging by Josh Rhodes (Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella) First Date is directed by Bill Berry (Producing Director of The 5th Avenue Theatre). Featuring Sara Chase ('Arrested Development,' The Toxic Avenger), Kristoffer Cusick (Wicked, Rent), Blake Hammond (Sister Act, Billy Elliot) and Kate Loprest ('Boardwalk Empire,' Hairspray), the cast of First Date also includes Vicki Noon (Wicked, Mamma Mia!). First Date begins performances Tuesday, July 9, 2013, and opens Thursday, August 8, 2013, at Broadway's Longacre Theatre (220 West 48th Street). Additional casting to be announced shortly. FOR THE RECORD: ZEMECKIS Begins 5/23 in LA

This summer's most spectacular Hollywood blockbuster will not be found in the movie theater this year but rather at Rockwell: Table & Stage beginning May 23 with For The Record: Zemeckis. Over the past two years the "For The Record" series has brought the movies to life as never seen before in a stunning 360-degree live theatrical concert experience. For The Record: Zemeckis begins previews Thursday, May 23 and officially opens Friday, May 31, 2013. Weekly performances are Thursday -Sunday at 8:30PM and will run through Saturday, July 20. Despite having a cast of incredible triple threats, overall, FLASHDANCE: THE MUSICAL---the new, Broadway-bound stage musical based on the popular 80's-era movie of the same name---seems like a well-meant endeavor that needs a serious overhaul in its disjointed execution. Today, 13 May 2013, 12 year old Ali Rasul from Hartlepool, will become the thirty-third boy to play Billy Elliot in the West End. Now in its ninth year at the Victoria Palace Theatre where the show is currently booking to 21 December 2013, Billy Elliot the Musical last month was awarded its fifth Laurence Olivier Award - the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award voted for by the theatregoing public. Alex Ko: From Iowa to Broadway, My Billy Elliot Story, the celebrated debut novel by Alex Ko that was endorsed by Sir Elton John, was released last week from HarperCollins Children's Books. The hardcover novel (and e-book edition) is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever books are sold. To kick off a general public release of the memoir, Barnes and Noble (corner of 82nd Street and Broadway, NYC) just hosted a Q&A and book signing with Alex Ko on May 9. The event will also benefit The Calhoun School. Moderating the Q&A was Stephen Daldry, the Tony Award winning Director of Billy Elliot the Musical. Check out photos from the event below! (more...)

Jeff Calhoun to Direct Noah Racey's PULSE Musical at Florida's Asolo Rep

Extending this season's hot streak of productions that make bold artistic statements, Asolo Repertory Theatre will present Noah Racey's Pulse. A song and dance celebration that harkens back to the golden age of hoofing, Pulse is written, conceived, and choreographed by Broadway song and dance man Noah Racey in collaboration with Broadway director and two-time Tony Award nominee Jeff Calhoun. Pulse opens on Thursday, May 23 with an 8 p.m. curtain. Opening night will be preceded by two preview performances on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:30 p.m. and May 22 at 8 p.m. The show runs through June 16, 2013 in Asolo Rep's Mertz Theatre located in The FSU Center for the Performing Arts.
