TPAC to Feature Artists-in-Residence in 2013 Work & Show Festival, Beg. 6/6

In its 17th (and final) season, the BMCC Tribeca PAC's Artists-in-Residence (AIR) hallmark program enables four to eight emerging and established artists-writers, dancers, and composers-to create and develop new work over the course of one year. We are celebrating this tremendous program with a final presentation that is indicative of the cutting-edge work this program has strived to present. The artists have been chosen by a panel of established performing arts professionals from some of the city's highest regarded organizations such as LaMama, Here ARTS, Abrams Arts Center, The New York State Council on the Arts, River to River, and Dance New Amsterdam. The artistic disciplines the artists come form are dance, multimedia, music, and theater. (more...)

BAM Announces 34 Events in Opera, Theater, Music and Dance for 2013 Next Wave Festival!

Joseph V. Melillo, executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, today announced programming for the 2013 Next Wave Festival. The festival runs from September 17 through December 22 and comprises opera, theater, music, and dance productions in the institution's three mainstage venues: the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, the BAM Harvey Theater, and the BAM Richard B. THE GERSHWINS' PORGY AND BESS Opens February 25 in Pittsburgh

The National Tour of THE GERSHWINS' PORGY AND BESS, winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, will star original Broadway cast members ALICIA HALL MORANas Bess, NATHANIEL STAMPLEY as Porgy and PHILLIP BOYKIN as Crown. The tour will also feature Broadway cast members SUMAYYA ALI as Clara, DAN BARNHILL as the Detective, BRYONHA MARIE PARHAM as Serena, ALLISON BLACKWELL as a Woman of Catfish Row, ROOSEVELT ANDRE CREDIT as a Fisherman and JOSEPH DELLGER as the Policeman. HBO Announces YoungArts MasterClass Season 2 Encores and Premieres

Season Two of the Emmy-nominated HBO series YoungArts MasterClass, in which renowned artists and masters teach and mentor young artists selected by the National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts), concludes with two nights of back-to-back episodes including encore presentations and premieres. Beginning at 6:30PM ET/PT on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 HBO2 will air encore presentations of Season Two episodes featuring master teachers Patti LuPone,Bobby McFerrin and John Guare. (more...)

Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival Opens the 81st Season with Dance Theatre of Harlem, 6/19

Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH), the groundbreaking and newly revitalized classical and contemporary ballet company, will open the 2013 Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival season in the Ted Shawn Theatre June 19-23. Led by founding member and former principal dancer, Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, the company will present a range of classic and new ballet work including George Balanchine's Agon, The Lark Ascending by Alvin Ailey, and Far But Close by Canadian contemporary choreographer John Alleyne. ODC Theater's annual fringe-style festival returns for a second year with samplings of contemporary dance from around the nation. Over two days, Friday, May 31 - Saturday, June 1, 2013 the Festival will feature three separate programs designed to spark conversation. Rebecca Lazier's COMING TOGETHER/ATTICA to Debut at The Invisible Dog, 6/13

On Thursday, June 13 (7 + 9 pm) at The Invisible Dog in Brooklyn, choreographer Rebecca Lazier and indie-classical ensemble Newspeak present the first US performances of Coming Together/Attica, a site-specific setting of Frederic Rzewski's iconic minimalist scores written following the 1971 prison riots in upstate New York. Lazier's dancers are Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener (formerly of Merce Cunningham Dance Company); Asli Bulbul, most recently from Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company; Jennifer Lafferty, who is featured in the work of Beth Gill and Yasuko Yokoshi; Pierre Guilbault; and Christopher Ralph. (more...)
