Theatre by the Blind to Present YESTERDAY'S at Promenade Playhouse, 4/18-5/5 by BWW

The owner of a failing jazz club seeks to save what her grandfather built, inspiring those around her to chase their dreams. Twelve visually impaired actors and musicians take the stage in Yesterday's, an original comedy created and performed by Theatre by the Blind, the country's only theater troupe composed entirely of blind actors. Created by the ensemble, co-written by Colin Simson and Lindsay Nyman, co-directed by Greg Shane and Lindsay Nyman, and presented by CRE Outreach, Yesterday's will run April 18 through May 5 at the Promenade Playhouse in Santa Monica. From the Top Gala Fundraiser UNIQUE AND UNMISSABLE Set for 5/22 at Back Bay Center by BWW News Desk - Mar 15, 2013
The ninth annual From the Top Gala fundraiser, UNIQUE AND UNMISSABLE, will take place Wednesday, May 22 at 6:30 PM at the Back Bay Events Center (180 Berkeley Street, Boston). The evening will include performances by the nation's outstanding young classical musicians with From the Top host and renowned concert pianist Christopher O'Riley. Jonathan Batiste and The Stay Human Band from New York, NY will be featured throughout the evening. Proceeds benefit From the Top's mission to support and celebrate America's next generation of classical musicians. Past From the Top galas have raised more than $300,000. (more...)

OEDIPUS REX XX/XY Opens 3/7 at La MaMa by BWW News Desk - Mar 06, 2013
What happens when Oedipus is a woman and Jocasta is a man? Driven by the belief that what was traditional in 429 BC is radical today, The Faux-Real Theatre Company searches beyond the Freudian notions of "boy loves mom," and re-examines Oedipus the King with modern eyes and ancient techniques, uncovering the fearful truths and the (occasionally comedic) grotesque ironies that Sophocles presented audiences 2000 years prior to the birth of psychology. Driven by the belief that what was traditional in 429 BC is radical today, FRTC performs Oedipus the King exactly as Sophocles intended… sort of. Men play all of the roles (including Love Interest/Mom Jocasta) just as the Greeks would have wanted it; only with Faux-Real, the role of Oedipus is played by a woman. Searching beyond the Freudian notions of "boy loves Mom," Faux-Real re-examines Oedipus with modern eyes (pun intended) and ancient techniques, to shed new light on this classic tale of sex, power, murder and the dark urges lurking inside of us all. La MaMa & The Faux-Real Theatre Co Present OEDIPUS REX XX/XY, Beginning 3/7 by BWW News Desk - Jan 25, 2013
The Faux-Real Theatre Company (FRTC) who have been bringing avant-garde theatre to populist audiences since 1994, will present their newest production: the ancient play OEDIPUS REX with a gender bending twist. It's classic theatre performed exactly as Sophocles intended…sort of. Preview performances of OEDIPUS REX XX/XY will begin Thursday March 7th prior to an official press opening on March 10th at La MaMa's First Floor Theatre (74A East 4th Street) in Manhattan. CELLBLOCK I & CELLBLOCK II Exhibitions Postponed at Andrea Rosen Gallery by BWW News Desk - Nov 02, 2012
Andrea Rosen Gallery will be postponing the opening of its Cellblock I & Cellblock II exhibition, curated by Robert Hobbs, that was scheduled to open on November 3rd. At this stage, the gallery is hopeful to be back open in approximately two-to-three weeks' time. The gallery will send an updated announcement as it learns more information.
