This yearÂ’s honorees included Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones, Daryl Roth, Ed Schultz and Masa Tanaka. 9 US Premieres Plus URBAN Set for New Victory Theatre 2012-13 Season

The New Victory Theater will launch its 2012-13 season with the U.S. premiere of URBAN by Circolombia, an edgy, thrilling and inspiring circus featuring young Colombian performers who share their real-life stories through acrobatics, aerial work and tremendous feats of strength. Company XIV, in association with Morningside Opera and SIREN Baroque, presents the World Premiere of Judge Me Paris, a Baroque Burlesque Opera, directed and choreographed by Austin McCormick. Judge Me Paris includes excerpts from John Eccles and John WeldonÂ’s Baroque opera The Judgment of Paris, sung by Morningside Opera, with a libretto by William Congreve, Baroque music performed by SIREN Baroque, and additional text by Jeff Takacs. This movement-based spectacular tells the story of a woman combating a variety of sleep disorders, phantasmagorical night terrors, hypnotic horrors, and other, visually stunning conjurings from the subconscious depths of her own disturbed mind. Symphony of Shadows merges striking elements of circus and aerial arts, dance and movement, burlesque, and operatic productions to vividly illustrate its storyline in a genre defying form, which "evokes a live-action silent film." The McCallum Theatre, the Coachella ValleyÂ’s premiere theatrical venue, celebrates its 25th Anniversary Season with a star-studded lineup of Classical Music, Jazz, Cabaret, Comedy and a Broadway Blockbuster Series which includes Rock of Ages, Dreamgirls and West Side Story. The McCallum Theatre opened its doors on January 2, 1988 with a gala performance honoring Bob Hope that was nationally televised. Since then The McCallum has been the Coachella ValleyÂ’s mecca for world-class entertainment including an extensive array of Broadway and Cabaret offerings. The man behind the tremendous success of the McCallumÂ’s eclectic performance calendar for the past thirteen years is Mitch Gershenfeld, Director of Presentations and Theatre Operations, who will take the helm as the theatreÂ’s President and CEO beginning June 1. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Gershenfeld as he begins preparations for The McCallumÂ’s exciting Silver Anniversary Season. The season kicks off on August 31 with comedy legend Steve Martin joined by the Grammy nominated Steep Canyon Rangers. Van Wezel’s 2011-2012 Season Chalks Up Over $6 Million in Sales

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall has just completed one of the most successful seasons in the theaterÂ’s forty-two year history, surpassing last seasonÂ’s sales. This yearÂ’s sales were $6,207,790 and 108,737 tickets sold, while last yearÂ’s sales were $5,559,227 and 99,946 tickets sold. This amount consists of Van Wezel presented Main Stage performances only, and does not take into account local companies, event rentals, and Van Wezel Schooltime performances. ( more...)

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE to Offer $29.50 Student Rush Tickets

A Streetcar Named Desire today announced that it will offer a limited number of student rush tickets for $29.50. Tickets will be available at the box office on the day of the performance, and each current student ID is eligible for two tickets. Streetcar began performances on Tuesday, April 3, and will open on Sunday, April 22, 2012. ( more...)
