BWW Critic's Choices: Best of Maine 2022
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold
- Dec 15, 2022
After three seemingly endless years, Maine's theatrical landscape has truly begun to come to life again after the pandemic. I am thrilled to be able to pen this article, having experienced a 2022 that saw the remarkable 'comebacks' of Maine's theatres. While the year was not without continued challenges, these brave, resilient companies managed to produce first-class live theatre for grateful audiences.
These are my personal choices of the best in Maine for 2022, grouped by theatre company and show.

Review: Say 'Hell Yes!' to THE COLOR PURPLE at Broadway At Music Circus
by Courtney Symes
- Aug 24, 2022
For me, the end of summer in Sacramento is signaled by the same event every year-the last show of the Broadway at Music Circus season. This summer’s end is particularly bittersweet, as it marks the finale of a return to the round after two years of being in the dark. Fittingly, this show is the most powerful production of the summer. The Color Purple is the last in what has been a remarkable season of unparalleled talent and delicate themes. Based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel and 1985 movie adaptation of the same name, The Color Purple opened on Broadway in 2005 and earned eleven Tony Award nominations.
Review: Roxy Regional Theatre's THE COLOR PURPLE is 'Emphatically, Beautifully, Electrifyingly Sung'
by Jeffrey Ellis
- Aug 15, 2022
The production of The Color Purple, now onstage at the Roxy, is without doubt the most emphatically, beautifully and electrifyingly sung musical I’ve seen at the historic theatre on the corner of First and Franklin in downtown Clarksville over the past three decades. Directed with confidence by Broadway veteran/Belmont University alumnus/Austin Peay State University professor Deonte Warren, with the spirited choreography of Ebone Amos and one of the finest, most talented casts ever to grace the stage, The Color Purple clearly ranks as one of the best shows in the company’s 39-season history (number 40 gets under way next month).

Review: THE COLOR PURPLE at The Muny
by James Lindhorst
- Aug 5, 2022
This Muny production of THE COLOR PURPLE is too beautiful for words. It is a stunning love letter to Alice Walker and her epistolary novel of redemption. Director Lili-Anne Browne’s vison brings to the stage a concert-like version of this production similar to the 2016 Tony Award Winning Broadway revival. Her leadership, coupled with Breon Arzell's spirited choreography, help this epic 40-year story come to life with theatrical sophistication. Music Director Jermaine Hill’s perfectly balanced orchestrations were almost unnoticeable while supporting the beautiful score sung by this incomparable company of actors.
