BWW 2012 Seattle Critic's Choice Awards (Jay's Picks)

It's been a helluva year for theater in the Seattle area. From the triumphant return of the Intiman with their summer festival to the hugely popular run of "Spring Awakening" from Balagan Theatre Seattle audiences were treated with some amazing shows and performances this past year. And so, allow me to shine the spotlight on some of my favorite outstanding moments from the past year with my 2012 BWW Seattle Critic's Choice Awards. (more...)

BWW Spotlight: Village Originals' 2012 Festival of New Musicals

Village Theatre was back this last weekend with their 12th Annual Village Originals Festival of New Musicals. A weekend packed with five new musicals presented as script in hand, staged reading workshops; the festival aids in the fostering and growth of these exciting new works. Some previous works have even gone on to Broadway success as "Next to Normal" (previous title "Feeling Electric") and "Million Dollar Quartet" had their start through the Village Originals Festival of New Musicals and went on to win multiple Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize ("Next to Normal"). And, as they did with last year's "Cloaked" Village also took a previous festival entry and gave it a larger production as "Lizzie Borden" had a three performance off book workshop of it's own at the First Stage Theatre down the street from their main stage Francis J. Gaudette Theatre.

CLOSER THAN EVER, with Lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. and Music by David Shire, presented by The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director) in association with Edward Negley, Neil Berg and Adam Friedson, recently resumed performances at The York Theatre at Saint Peter's (Citicorp Building, entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). BWW Reviews: LIZZIE BORDEN - An Intense Evening at 14th Street Theatre

"Lizzie Borden took an ax, gave her mother forty whacks, when she saw what she had done, gave her father forty-one." That line from a caustic poem not only attempted to describe the 1892 murder of Borden's parents, but became a limerick used gleefully by girls for jumping rope.

PlayhouseSquare and Baldwin-Wallace College collaborate for a fifth year to present the Midwest regional premiere of LIZZIE BORDEN, a rock musical directed by Victoria Bussert, at PlayhouseSquare's 14th Street Theatre.
