Kait Kerrigan, Joe Iconis and More Set for Rhinebeck Writers Retreat by BWW News Desk - May 23, 2013
Kathy Evans, Founder and Executive Director, announced the nine musicals and eighteen writers selected for the third summer of the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat. For nine consecutive weeks beginning June 23rd, each writing team will have an individual weeklong residency in Rhinebeck, New York to write their musical. All costs are fully funded by donors including The ASCAP Foundation, The Dramatists Guild Fund, and The Noel Coward Foundation. Writers include Tony-winners and nominees Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening), and Heidi Rodewald and Stew (Passing Strange), and multi-award winners Adam Gwon, Laura Harrington, Joe Iconis, Kait Kerrigan, and Brian Lowdermilk. Joey Contreras Named Broadway Dreams Foundation's Artist in Residence; New Initiatives Announced by BWW News Desk - May 14, 2013
The Broadway Dreams Foundation announced their dedication to three educational initiatives that align with their mission and will offer BDF students exciting performance opportunities while also supporting emerging artists and creative projects. The three initiatives include a sophomore album by musical theater songwriter Joey Contreras, the development of a new musical, and a showcase featuring BDF students from across the country at NYC's New World Stages. NAMT Awards $10,000 to Support Barrington Stage's SOUTHERN COMFORT World Premiere, 7/19-8/10 by BWW News Desk - Apr 20, 2013
Barrington Stage Company (BSC), the award-winning theatre in Downtown Pittsfield, MA, under the leadership Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and Managing Director Tristan Wilson, has announced it has received a $10,000 National Fund grant from the National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT), for its Musical Theatre Lab world premiere production of the musical, Southern Comfort, July 19 - August 10. National Alliance for Musical Theatre Announces $37,000 in Grants by BWW News Desk - Apr 15, 2013
The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT) announces 11 awards granted from their National Fund for New Musicals, a major funding program to support NAMT member not-for-profit theatres in their collaborations with writers to create, develop and produce new musicals. Now in its fifth year, the Fund will provide grants totaling $37,000 to 11 organizations across the country. (more...)

The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University has announced that it will present the world premiere of the musical Witness Uganda, created by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews, and directed by A.R.T. Artistic Director Diane Paulus. The production will begin performances at the Loeb Drama Center, 64 Brattle Street, Cambridge in February of 2014. (more...)

Winter Miller and Lance Horne's AMANDINE Makes World Premiere at Cherry Lane Theatre, Jan 8-26 by BWW

Amandine, ten years in the making, is a collaboration between three of New York City's most distinctive theater artists: Winter Miller, 13P founding member who penned In Darfur (The Public Theater), among other acclaimed plays; Lance Horne, Emmy Award-winning composer and pianist known for his own work and collaborations with Alan Cumming, Amanda Palmer, Meow Meow, Sandra Bernhard and Justin Vivian Bond; and Drama Desk Award- winning director Josh Hecht (Christine Jorgensen Reveals), who specializes in new plays. Amandine is a singular love story, inspired by the incredible memoirs of Herculine Barbin, a 19th century intersex person who was raised a girl and died a man. The ensemble cast includes Broadway veterans Lea DeLaria, Nathan Lee Graham and Alexandra Silber, in a world premiere at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce Street) main stage January 8-26, 2013. CAP21's Writers Residency Concludes by BWW News Desk - Jan 24, 2013
The CAP21 Writers Residency January 2013, concluded this past Friday in New York City. The residency provides 80 hours of free space, a stipend, and guidance from the Artistic Director, Eliza Ventura. Selected writers are chosen and given the opportunity to begin or further develop new musicals in a supportive and focused environment. (more...)

Rhinebeck Writers Retreat Now Accepting Applications by BWW News Desk - Jan 23, 2013
Kathy Evans, Founder and Executive Director of the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, announced that applications are open to all musical theatre writers for eight retreats taking place in Summer 2013. Rhinebeck Writers Retreat provides a writing team with a weeklong residency to work on their musical in a private home near Rhinebeck, New York. There will be eight one-week retreats offered between June 22 and August 25th. Applications are due February 28 and the submission fee is $20. The submitted musical can be at any stage of development, as long as it has not been published or licensed. Breaking News: Disney's ALADDIN to Play Pre-Broadway Tryout in Toronto Starting November 2013; Broadway Spring 2014 by Rialto Chatter - Jan 22, 2013
Now, Disney Theatrical Productions has confirmed that Aladdin, a new musical based on the Academy Award winning animated film, will play its pre-Broadway engagement at Toronto's Ed Mirvish Theatre(formerly the Canon) November 13, 2013 to January 12, 2014 and will open at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre in 2014. The show will feature music by Alan Menken; lyrics by the late Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin with a book by Beguelin. Casey Nicholaw will direct and choreograph. (more...)

35 Writers Head to Goodspeed Musicals' First-Ever Musical Theatre Writers Colony by BWW News Desk - Jan 21, 2013
A total of 35 established and emerging writers, composers and lyricists will converge on the Goodspeed campus this month to participate in the first-ever Johnny Mercer Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals.
