5th Avenue Theatre Celebrates Tony Nominations for SCANDALOUS and A CHRISTMAS STORY by BWW News Desk - Apr 30, 2013
The announcement of Tony Award nominations raised a round of cheers this morning in the Emerald City as The 5th Avenue Theatre's Broadway hit A Christmas Story, The Musical received three nods from the American Theatre Wing, including Best Musical. Additionally, Carolee Carmello received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance in Scandalous: The Life and Trials of Aimee Semple McPherson, which premiered at The 5th in 2011 as Saving Aimee. Three friends embark on a joyous journey of sisterhood, discovering their inner 'duende' through a flamenco class for middle-aged women. Heart Song, the newest comedy/drama from Stephen Sachs (Bakersfield Mist, Cyrano), opens at The Fountain Theatre on May 25 with Shirley Jo Finney (In the Red and Brown Water) directing and choreography by internationally renowned flamenco dancer Maria "Cha Cha" Bermudez. ACT Theatre Announces Upcoming Season by BWW News Desk - Apr 10, 2013
ACT - A Contemporary Theatre announces a jam packed spring and summer of shows that cover a broad range of contemporary performance. ACT presents a world premiere of Seattle playwright Katie Forgette's Assisted Living opening in late April. Then ACT gets its feet WET by teaming up with Washington Ensemble Theatre and delves deep into the works of new authors with the intimate Construction Zone reading series. June brings proven hit shows to the boards with the regional premiere of the Broadway smash success Other Desert Cities, and master comedian improviser and impersonator extraordinaire Frank Ferrante returns for his critically acclaimed tribute to Groucho Marx in An Evening With Groucho. The sizzling examination of modern feminism Rapture, Blister, Burn takes flight in July, and August will see the return of Seattle favorites The Love Markets for their big upcoming CD release. Summer wraps up when new Associate Artistic Director John Langs directs Will Eno's Middletown, a whimsical and curious play that examines a constellation of ideas about life, death, and everything in the middle. Announcing ACT - A Contemporary Theatre's New Play Award: Red Earth, Gold Gate, Shadow Sky by Mark Jenkins is the recipient for 2013. ACT has also committed to producing the play in the 2014 Mainstage season. Jenkins' play is a harrowing tale of a Cambodian family who lives through the American bombing of Southeast Asia, survives the horrors of the killing fields and the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, struggles to adapt as immigrants in modern Seattle, and has to fight for a place in America where incarceration and deportation are a constant threat.
