Review: SISTER ACT - National Tour, Germany
by André Böke - May 10, 2026

“Sister Act” owes its status as a global phenomenon to the iconic Whoopi Goldberg film, but Alan Menken’s stage version of the beloved Hollywood comedy has long since conquered stages all over the world. In its acclaimed West End incarnation, the musical has already been touring German-speaking venues for a third year, presented by production company Showslot, continuing to fill auditoriums all over the country. Both the linguistic adaptation and the technical realization for touring operations across Germany are flawless. The show is nothing short of a gospel of good fun – hallelujah!
Review: TOP HAT at Châtelet
by Patrick Honoré - Apr 20, 2026

Kathleen Marshall’s sumptuous revival of (Top Hat) transforms the Théâtre du Châtelet into a 1930s fantasia of tap brilliance, screwball romance, and Irving Berlin classics. Phillip Attmore and Nicole‑Lily Baisden lead a radiant cast through a whirlwind of mistaken identities, Art Deco glamour, and showstopping choreography. Running until 3 May.

Review: PURITANI Is Bel Canto Bliss with Oropesa and Brownlee under Armiliato's Baton
by Richard Sasanow - Jan 7, 2026

The Met’s new production of Vincenzo Bellini’s I PURITANI made its debut on New Year’s Eve, but I caught up with it at its third performance on January 6. I was glad I did--because it offered a cast with staggering singing abilities in four major roles that offered major demands, along with at least one minor one and the brilliant Met chorus under Tilman Michael. Simply put, soprano Lisette Oropesa, tenor Lawrence Brownlee, baritone Artur Rucinski and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn sang the pants off their roles, with Marco Armiliato conducting the fearless Met orchestra.

Review: MAZEPPA, Grange Park Opera
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Jun 16, 2025

Even ardent opera fans may struggle to recall the story or the score for Mazeppa. Based on a poem by Pushkin, Tchaikovsky's opera has been unjustly overshadowed by his Eugene Onegin. Last staged at the London Coliseum in 1984, Grange Park Opera have landed a coup by engaging the English National Opera orchestra to play for David Pountney’s excellent new production.
Review: MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Grange Park Opera
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Jun 9, 2025

Grange Park Opera has opened its new season with a crowd-pleaser. Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly remains problematic, with its story of a Japanese teenage geisha, impregnated and cruelly abandoned by an American lieutenant. However, it is still wildly popular, mainly due to its ravishing score.
