Review: ONE MAN, TWO GUVNERS at Town Players Of New Canaan

by Pia Haas — Mar 6, 2026

There’s something wonderfully nuts about The Town Players of New Canaan taking on One Man, Two Guvnors, Richard Bean’s 2011 hit based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni. The original, written in 1743, is a classic commedia dell’arte comedy built on disguises, twins, and glorious chaos.

Review: ONE MAN, TWO GUV'NORS: A Laugh Out Loud Farce Filled With Surprises At CVRep

by June August — Jan 21, 2026

Whether or not you are familiar with this chaotic style of British comedy, Richard Bean’s One Man, Two Guv’nors offers an enjoyable introduction to fast-paced, wacky farce. And I mean wacky. There’s nothing serious or thought-provoking about it. There’s enough of that on the news. And “guv’nor” has nothing to do with politics. It’s a colloquial British term for one’s boss or employer, in this case two employers. Bean adapted the play, set in 1963 Brighton, from Carlo Goldoni’s 18th century classic The Servant of Two Masters.

Review: ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS at A Noise Within

by Evan Henerson — Sep 12, 2025

Staged with take-no-prisoners verve by Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and Geoff Elliott, Richard Bean’s romp of a play is a joyride through a 60s England in which would-be actors ham it up gleefully, blondes are dizzy, would-be lovers are temporarily thwarted, and positively everybody is ready to cut loose to the strains of a Beatles-inspired skiffle band.

BWW Review: ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS, National Theatre At Home

by Aliya Al-Hassan — Apr 3, 2020

Wouldn't it be ironic that the time that the whole of the UK (and indeed the world) really fell in love with theatre was when no-one could actually go there? Millions of people who already love the performing arts are desperately missing their fixes. But now this virus is the great equaliser; everyone is at home, yet still want and need to be entertained.

BWW Review: ONE MAN, TWO GUVNORS, Nuffield Southampton Theatres

by Jo Fisher — Oct 2, 2019

If any show proves that physical comedy is timeless, it's One Man, Two Guvnors, which brings a subversive 18th-century Italian comedy onto the 21st-century stage, and then promptly pushes it down the stairs to uproarious laughter.
