Maxwell Caulfield began his professional stage career in London before moving to the United States. He made his New York debut in Hot Rock Hotel (1978) and starred in Class Enemy (1979), earning a Theatre World Award. In 1980, he appeared in Hitting Town in Los Angeles and in a production of The Elephant Man.
During the early 1980s, Caulfield was a member of the Mirror Repertory Company, appearing in productions including Paradise Lost, Rain, Inheritors, and The Hasty Heart. He made his Off-Broadway debut in Entertaining Mr. Sloane (1981) and later made his Broadway debut in An Inspector Calls. Additional stage credits include Sleuth (1988), Salonika, Loot, Tryst (2006), Our Leading Lady (2007), Chicago in London's West End and on Broadway (2007), and Cactus Flower (2011). In 2024, he appeared in the 10th Anniversary Concert of Cool Rider at the London Palladium.
Caulfield's film career began with a childhood role in Accident (1967). He is best known for starring as Michael Carrington in Grease 2 (1982). Other film credits include Gettysburg (1993), Empire Records (1995), The Real Blonde (1997), and The Man Who Knew Too Little (1997).
On television, Caulfield appeared in Dynasty (1985–1986), The Colbys (1985–1987), Murder, She Wrote (1988–1991), Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990), Spider-Man (1995–1998), The Rockford Files: Godfather Knows Best (1996), Casualty (2003–2004), Emmerdale (2009–2010), Modern Family (2013), and NCIS (2013). In 2026, he appeared on General Hospital as Apollo, a New York City art gallery owner.
