Review: IT SHOULDA BEEN YOU at Good Theater

by Steve Feeney — Oct 6, 2025

Are weddings where people sometimes find themselves “happily unhappy”?  That contradiction and it’s overcoming is at the heart of It Shoulda Been You, the first mainstage production presented at the new home of Portland’s Good Theater.

Review: ANGELS IN AMERICA in the New Millennium at Portland Stage

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold — May 13, 2024

Portland Stage joins forces with the Dramatic Repertory Company to revive Tony Kushner’s multiple award-winning 1991 drama, ANGELS IN AMERICA, in a production that Artistic Director Anita Stewart proudly calls “all Maine-made.”  The company has shouldered the huge task of presenting the sprawling seven-hour epic in two parts, the first of which “Millennium Approaches” proves its ability to create a powerful emotional impact long after its premiere.

BWW Review: The Insidious Spiral of Deceit: PACK OF LIES at the Good

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold — Feb 17, 2020

The tautly paced, compactly plotted 1983 psychological spy thriller, PACK OF LIES by Hugh Whitemore, proves to be a cliff hanger for audiences at the Good Theater, where its recent revival, expertly directed by Brian P. Allen with a finely tuned ensemble cast, demonstrates the relevance of its message in the chaotic political context in which we currently live.

BWW Critic's Choices: Best of Maine 2015

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold — Nov 30, 2015

The theatrical scene continued to be lively in Maine this year, with the Portland-area theatres presenting a number of stunning world premieres and the musical theatre scene gloriously vibrant. These are my personal choices of the best in Maine, grouped by theatre company and show: Because their repertoires are so vastly different, and because both companies produced outstanding seasons, my vote for highest honors goes to both Maine State Music Theatre and the Good Theater.

BWW Reiews: THE OTHER PLACE Offers Intriguing and Compassionate Insight into Dementia

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold — Mar 9, 2015

Portland's Good Theater's fourth play of the season is the Maine premiere of Sharr White's The Other Place, a compelling and compassionate exploration of trauma, illusion, and dementia. Directed with quiet, yet hair-raising intensity by Brian P. Allen and starring the remarkable Denise Poirier, the production keeps the audience invested and involved from start to finish.

BWW Critic's Choices: Maine Best of 2013

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold — Dec 26, 2013

Despite its location far, far north, and its relatively sparse population compared to cultural capitals, Maine boasts a rich regional theatre climate. There are quite a few thriving, adventurous, permanent professional companies, as well as an excellent contingent of community theatres. This year offered a wealth of exciting choices. Here is my personal list for 2013, grouped by theatre company and show:

BWW Reviews: A.R. Gurney In THE GRAND MANNER at the Good Theater

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold — Nov 14, 2013

The Good Theater's (Portland, ME) New England premiere of A.R. Gurney's latest play, The Grand Manner, is a wistful, droll, and stylish production of this charming, nostalgic paean to theatre on the Great White Way in 1948. The play, which originally opened at New York's Lincoln Center Theatre in 2010, deals with an autobiographical episode, augmented into legend.
