Robert Redford

Robert Redford was an American actor, director, producer, and filmmaker whose career spanned more than six decades across theatre and film. Born August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, Redford studied art and later moved to New York City, where he trained as an actor and began building his career onstage before becoming one of Hollywood's most recognizable leading men.

Redford made his Broadway debut in 1959 as a replacement in the role of Myers in Tall Story. Later that year, he appeared as Frederick Ashe, Jr. (Buzz) in The Highest Tree. He returned to Broadway in 1960 as Dennis Walsh in James Costigan's Little Moon of Alban, appearing alongside Julie Harris. In 1961, he starred as Mike Mitchell in Norman Krasna's comedy Sunday in New York, a performance that earned him a Theatre World Award. His most notable Broadway role came two years later, when he originated the role of Paul Bratter opposite Elizabeth Ashley in Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park. Directed by Mike Nichols, the comedy opened at the Biltmore Theatre in 1963 and became a major Broadway hit. Redford remained with the production through September 1964.

As his screen career gained momentum, Redford transitioned away from the stage and became one of the defining film stars of his generation. His breakthrough years included such films as Barefoot in the Park, in which he reprised his Broadway role opposite Jane Fonda, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which paired him with Paul Newman. He went on to star in an extraordinary run of films including The Candidate, Jeremiah Johnson, The Way We Were, The Sting, The Great Gatsby, Three Days of the Condor, All the President's Men, The Natural, Out of Africa, and Indecent Proposal.

Redford also established himself as an acclaimed filmmaker. He made his feature directorial debut with 1980's Ordinary People, which won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Redford. His subsequent directing credits included The Milagro Beanfield War, A River Runs Through It, Quiz Show, The Horse Whisperer, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Lions for Lambs, and The Conspirator. He frequently worked as a producer as well, both on his own films and on projects by other filmmakers.

Beyond his work as an actor and director, Redford played an influential role in the development of American independent filmmaking. He founded the Sundance Institute, which became an important organization for supporting independent filmmakers and artists, and his name became closely associated with the Sundance Film Festival.

Over the course of his career, Redford received numerous honors for his contributions to film and American culture. While he became internationally famous for his screen work, his five Broadway appearances—from Tall Story in 1959 through Barefoot in the Park in 1963—formed an important foundation for the career that followed.

He passed away in 2025 at the age of 89.
