The Shed Opens This Friday With Specially Commissioned New Works


The Shed, New York City's new arts center dedicated to commissioning, develops, and presents original works of art, across all disciplines, for all audiences, will open to the public on April 5 with the world premiere of Soundtrack of America. The five-night concert series, conceived and directed by Steve McQueen with a creative team led by Quincy Jones and Maureen Mahon, celebrates the unrivaled impact of African American music on contemporary culture with performances by a new generation of artists. BWW Review Celebrating the Legacy of BALANCHINE: THE CITY CENTER YEARS


In conjunction with the landmark 75th anniversary season of the New York City Center, the performances of Balanchine: The City Center Years honor George Balanchine, one of the greatest choreographers of American 20th century ballet. Mr. Balanchine is most widely known for co-founding the New York City Ballet with Lincoln Kirsten in 1948, at the City Center. It was there he developed some of his most iconic ballets that have made an impact in dance across the globe. In an unprecedented international tribute, the series featured some of the world's greatest ballet companies- all accompanied by the New York City Ballet Orchestra. Sunday, November 4th closed the celebration with performances by The Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, and The Mariinksy Ballet.

New York City Center Commissions Portrait Series From Nina Robinson


In honor of New York City Center's 75th Anniversary Season, the institution is presenting a program of visual art commissions for the first time in its history. One of three commissioned works, artist and educator Nina Robinson offers her latest project, a series of portraits entitled Home, on display to the public in the through-block passage adjacent to City Center. The exhibition features a variety of artists to whom City Center provides an artistic home including, Victoria Clark, Robert Fairchild, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Robinson is joined by architect Jorge Otero-Pailos and conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner as part of this special visual art program.
