BIO

Kristen Johnston is a multi-talented actress known for her work on stage, television, and film. Born on September 20, 1967, in Washington, D.C., Johnston grew up in a family of lawyers and politicians. However, she had always been interested in acting and moved to New York City after graduating from high school to pursue her dream.



Johnston began her career in off-Broadway productions, including "The Lights" and "The Balcony." Her breakthrough came in 1991 when she was cast as Sally Bowles in the Broadway revival of "Cabaret." Her performance earned her critical acclaim and a Theatre World Award. She continued to work on Broadway, appearing in productions such as "Beggars in the House of Plenty" and "The Women."

In addition to her stage work, Johnston has also made a name for herself on television. She is best known for her role as Sally Solomon on the hit sitcom "3rd Rock from the Sun." The show ran from 1996 to 2001 and earned Johnston two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She also had recurring roles on "ER," "Ugly Betty," and "The Exes."

Johnston has also appeared in numerous films throughout her career. She made her film debut in 1994's "Backfire!" and has since appeared in movies such as "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas," and "Bride Wars." She also starred in the independent film "Strangers with Candy," which was based on the Comedy Central series of the same name.

In addition to her work in acting, Johnston has also been involved in advocacy work. She is a supporter of the LGBT community and has worked with organizations such as GLAAD and The Trevor Project. She has also spoken out about her struggles with addiction and has been sober since 2007.

Johnston returned to Broadway in 2010, starring in the revival of "The Women." She received positive reviews for her performance as Sylvia Fowler and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. She also appeared in the off-Broadway production of "So Help Me God!" in 2011.

In 2013, Johnston starred in the ABC sitcom "The Exes" alongside Donald Faison and Wayne Knight. The show ran for four seasons and earned Johnston critical acclaim for her comedic timing and delivery.

In 2019, Johnston returned to Broadway once again, starring in the revival of "Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus." The play, written by Taylor Mac, received mixed reviews but Johnston's performance was praised by critics.

Throughout her career, Johnston has proven herself to be a versatile and talented actress. Her work on stage, television, and film has earned her numerous accolades and a dedicated fan base. She continues to be an advocate for important causes and a role model for aspiring actors.
