Joan Stein is a producer and theatre executive known for her work on Broadway and Off-Broadway. She was born in Brooklyn, New York and attended Brooklyn College, where she studied English and theatre.
Stein began her career in the theatre industry as a stage manager for the off-Broadway production of "The Fantasticks" in 1960. She went on to work with the New York Shakespeare Festival, where she served as the production stage manager for the original production of "Hair" in 1967.
In 1970, Stein co-founded the Manhattan Theatre Club with Lynne Meadow. The company started as an Off-Off-Broadway theatre and has since become one of the most influential non-profit theatre companies in the country. Under Stein's leadership, the Manhattan Theatre Club has produced several Tony Award-winning productions, including "Proof," "Love! Valour! Compassion!," and "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife."
In addition to her work with the Manhattan Theatre Club, Stein has produced several Broadway productions, including "The Heidi Chronicles," "The Pillowman," and "The Play That Goes Wrong." She has also produced Off-Broadway productions, such as "The Laramie Project" and "The Other Place."
Stein's work in the theatre industry has earned her several awards and honors. In 2000, she received the Robert Whitehead Award for Outstanding Achievement in Commercial Theatre Producing from the Commercial Theater Institute. She was also inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2014.
Most recently, Stein produced the Broadway production of "The Lifespan of a Fact" in 2018, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Cherry Jones, and Bobby Cannavale.
