Hanley Smith BIO

Hanley Smith is a Georgia-grown actor, singer and (despite her roots) New York Rangers hockey fan who has also been known to boogie quite well. She graduated from Davidson College with a BA in both English and in Theatre where she had the opportunity to study with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company during their four-year residency with the college.

In addition to acting, Hanley serves as the Adult Educational Programs Coordinator for the non-profit arts organization, R.Evolución Latina, challenging children and young artists to "dare to go beyond" their perceived limitations through dance, music and theatre. She is also a producer of the comedy troupe A Drinking Game NYC and a member of the modern-day folk trio, A Band Called Honalee, which is inspired by the legacy of Peter, Paul and Mary and their friends.

Recent credits include: Heidi in WHAT THE CONSTITUTION MEANS TO ME (North Carolina Theatre Company); Vanda in VENUS IN FUR (The Fulton); Dorothy Collins in POWERHOUSE (NY Times Critics' Pick); Fantine in LES MISERABLES (The Fulton); Dierdre in THE COTTAGE (World Premier); Cecily in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (Gulfshore Playhouse); Luisa in THE FANTASTICKS (Virginia Stage); Sally in THE VOICE OF THE TURTLE (Merrimack Rep); The Women in THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (at The Signature with Sonnet Rep); and Mrs. Givings in IN THE NEXT ROOM, OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY (Metrolina Theatre Award nomination). BWW Interview: Refilling the Cup of Hope: Hanley Smith & Will Ray in MSMT's SOUND OF MUSIC

“Marc Robin ‘s vision for this production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC is that of a joyful, hopeful child,” says Hanley Smith, the actress who makes her debut as Maria von Trapp this week as Maine State Music Theatre kicks off its “Revival Season.” Describing the lens through which director/choreographer Robin views the piece, she continues, “This production comes from a very joyful, youthful place at the same time that there is an awareness of the weight and import of the story. In the face of deep darkness in the world, the light becomes all the brighter. Marc knows how to create both those worlds and the battle between them and make you really want the light to win. And you believe it CAN win. And that is not naïveté; that is an act of courage.”
