Sara Farrington's NEAR VICKSBURG Plays Incubator Arts Project, Now thru 3/16

Sara Farrington's NEAR VICKSBURG will run today, March 6-16, 2014 at Incubator Arts.

Near Vicksburg is set in the Civil War during the Siege of Vicksburg. On May 18th, 1863 Union troops (or "Feds") fell upon the river city of Vicksburg, MS and fought for it until July 4th, a total of 47 days. To escape the relentless artillery fire, mortar attacks and bombardments, the citizens of Vicksburg, mostly women, children and soon-to-be-former slaves, dug and hid in a series of 500 caves in the hills and bluffs of the city.Near Vicksburg follows three completely powerless people hiding in one of these caves: Jane, a middle class Southern woman, her husband's slave, George, and Jane's teenaged daughter. As the war rages only inches away from them, Jane and George create their own version of society in the claustrophobic cave, with its own set of rules, boundaries, language and physicality.

Sara Farrington (playwright/director): Sara Farrington's recent work includes Requiem For Black Marie (Incubator Arts Project, Foxy Films), Mickey & Sage (Incubator Arts Project, Foxy Films), and workshop productions of Near Vicksburg (Walkerspace, Foxy Films). Other work includes The Vultures (Weasel Festival), That Stays There (Great Plains Theater Conference, Bushwick Starr Reading Series, Little Theater at Dixon Place), The Death of Evie Avery (FringeNYC), The Rise & Fall of Miles & Milo (FringeNYC, winner: Outstanding Playwriting). Sara's work has toured to The Great Plains Theater Conference and The National Theater Institute at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. Mickey & Sage will also premiere in Sao Paulo, Brazil in September 2014. Sara is a MacDowell Colony Fellow and Bay Area Playwrights Festival Finalist. Sara is the recipient of several Dragon's Egg Residencies and has participated in Erik Ehn's silent playwriting retreats. She teaches playwriting at The College of Staten Island. She produces workshop versions of her own work at Foxy Films, her live/work space in Downtown Brooklyn where she lives with husband Reid Farrington and son, Jack. MFA in playwriting from Brooklyn College with Mac Wellman.

Megan Emery Gaffney (Jane): Megan has had the great fortune to appear in previous Sara Farrington productions: Requiem for Black Marie (Incubator, Foxy Films); Mickey & Sage (Foxy Films, O'Neill/NTI); That Stays There (Little Theatre at Dixon Place). Other recent New York productions include Frank Boudreaux's Other Elegant Lies (Incubator); President Plays (Ars Nova); Betwixt Them Made (4th Street Theatre); Missing Persons (Dixon Place); Target Margin's Dukus (The Brick) and Karma Kharms (Bushwick Starr). Ugo Chukwu (George): Ugo was recently seen in Chioiri Miyagawa's world premiere of I Came to Look for You on Tuesday at LaMama. Other credits include JOB, I Hate f-ing Mexicans, These Seven Sicknesses, Future Anxiety with The Flea Theater, The (*) Inn with Target Margin, The Bad and the Better with The Amoralists, and Brooklyn College's Weasel Festival. He received his BFA at Brooklyn College.

Zoe Van Tieghem (Cilla): Zoë is a sophomore drama major at LaGuardia HS. Theater: Catherine in The Purple Lights of Joppa Illinois (Dorset Theatre Festival), Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Alice in Wonderland, Gertrude McFuzz in Seussical, and Suzi in The Marvelous Wonderettes. Film: Whisper Me A Lullaby, The Other People, College Wake and The Last Keepers. Principal dancer/singer in the NY Conservatory for the Arts touring company (performing at Disney World and in Branson, Missouri).

Incubator Arts Project cultivates and presents a multi-generational community of artists who challenge the conventions of live performance by producing original work at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery. IAP programs provide access to a fully equipped venue along with personalized career support and strategic investment of resources individually tailored to the needs of each artist.

By providing production opportunities for emerging to mid-career artists, Incubator Arts Project functions as a training ground where formative repertoire is conceived and new work can be constructed as each participant's artistic voice develops a distinct style. In addition to offering artists exclusive access to a theater, technical assistance and administrative support, staff provides professional mentoring and advisement to assist in the process of making well-considered choices in support of artists' long-term stability and success during all stages of their careers.

Core programs include the New Performance Series, Other Forces, Music and Short Form. Incubator Arts Project is fiscally managed by Performing Artservices Inc., a New York based non-profit arts organization, and is artistically led by a team of curators who collectively make programmatic, artistic and organizational decisions: Travis Just, Samara Naeymi, Daniel Nelson, Brendan Regimbal and Shannon Sindelar.

Incubator Arts Project was originally known as the Incubator and began in 2006 as a program of Richard Foreman's legendary Ontological-Hysteric Theater. Since then, it has presented award-winning work by artists including: Alec Duffy, Banana Bag & Bodice, Debate Society, 31 Down, Daniel Fish, Half-Straddle, Karinne Keithley, Object Collection, Vampire Cowboys, and Witness Relocation. Incubator artists have seen their work tour nationally and internationally and go on to Off-Broadway runs.
