Defying Gravity artfully interweaves the past with the present and the lives of the participants and bystanders of the ill-fated Challenger mission. Through the memories and impressions of painter Claude Monet, a NASA mechanic, a bartender, a retired couple, the Teacher and her grieving daughter we explore the impact of art, religion, loss and the limits of human possibility.
This work presented as part of The Southern Theater's ARTshare program, in repertory with resident company Theatre Novi Most, is directed by Swandive Theatre founders Meg DiSciorio and Damon Runnals and includes a distinguished team of Twin Cities artists: actors David Coral, Bryan Grosso, James Lekvin, Maggie Scanlan and Lacey Anne Zeiler and designers Ursula K. Bowden, Lisa Conley, Per Greibrok, Shane Rohman and Kevin Springer. Featuring New York based actor Erin Roberts, and San Francisco actor Roneet Aliza Rahamim.
Defying Gravity uses a fluid structure to seamlessly transition between memories and supposed reality. Swandive's resident design team takes a minimalist approach to create an environment of light and dark, intimacy and isolation, dream and consciousness. Asking the question "...isn't that after all why some fool would want to put themselves on top of a rocket in the first place?"
