David S. Traub, Jr. is a Philadelphia-based playwright. Traub’s first two plays, Lincoln in Louisville and Woodford Place, were inspired by his life growing up in Louisville. Both plays were produced and performed at the Alley Theatre in Louisville. Traub attended university in Philadelphia and stayed on there where he followed a career in architecture, all the while writing in a spectrum of genres.
In contrast to Louisville, where train travel is virtually non-existent, living on the East Coast allowed Traub to experience rail travel on the Amtrak trains which ply the tracks up and down the coast line, and up to New England as far as Vermont. Train to Essex Junction therefore has no roots thematically in his former life in Louisville. This new play is based upon an actual event in Traub’s life traveling from Philadelphia to Vermont to visit friends. As in his first two plays, a major theme of Train to Essex Junction is the portrayal of friendship in its various forms and transformations.
