Award-winning Son of Semele Ensemble announces its next production, Archipelago by Caridad Svich, to be presented at the Son of Semele Theater, 3301 Beverly Boulevard, from May 27 to June 18, 2017.

Lyrical and dreamlike, Archipelago follows two lovers across time and continents, through chance encounters and missed connections. She lives detached from her own history; his casts a shadow wherever he goes. Theirs is the story of our globalized world, crystallized in Caridad Svich's humane insights and haunting prose.

"Archipelago makes the personal political," says director Barbara Kallir, "focusing on people from different cultures who want to be together but are driven apart time and again by world events, misunderstandings, and unreliable memories. I often refer to it as a love story about globalization."

Kallir, a member of Son of Semele Ensemble, previously directed the company's productions of Sex & God, Roadkill Confidential and Slaughter City, among others. The cast comprises Ensemble members Michael Evans Lopez and Sarah Rosenberg. The design team is made up Meg Cunningham (set), Alexander Le Vaillant Freer (sound), John Nobori (sound and original music), Giovanni Ortega (choreography), Katerina Pangsolingan (projections) and Lena Sands (costumes). Ensemble member Flor San Roman is the stage manager.

Playwright Caridad Svich received a 2012 OBIE Award for Lifetime Achievement in the theatre, a 2012 Edgerton Foundation New Play Award for Guapa, and the 2011 American Theatre Critics Association Primus Prize for her play The House of the Spirits, based on the Isabel Allende novel. She has won the National Latino Playwriting Award (sponsored by Arizona Theatre Company) twice, including in the year 2013 for her play Spark. She has been short-listed for the PEN Award in Drama four times, including in the year 2012 for her play Magnificent Waste. Her works in English and Spanish have been seen at venues across the US and abroad.
