Seeking:
James (Jim) Warnock:
30s, Caucasian man, American. Works for the CIA—sent to Afghanistan to finance and arm anti-Soviet Afghan soldiers. Extremely intelligent, sharp—charismatic, with a definite sense of humor. Fearless in the face of confrontation.
Dmitri Gromov:
40s, Caucasian man, Russian. Head KGB officer in the region. Cynical, intelligent and darkly humorous. A life-long soldier, he feels sharply the prolonged separation between him and his family.
Abdullah Khan:
40s-early 50s, Afghan man. A powerful warlord, engaged in battling the Soviets, who earns Warnock’s trust and respect. Charismatic, and possessed of a definite gravitas.
Simon Craig:
30s, Caucasian man. British. Intelligence officer—wickedly smart, with a biting wit. Barely hides his contempt for his countries’ lack of influence and tight purse strings.
Saeed:
20s. Afghan man. One of Abdullah’s most-trusted soldiers, and his translator. Hot-tempered, and confident, sometimes to the point of cockiness. Dangerous, but also naturally funny.
Colonel Afridi:
30s. Pakistani man. Highly-ranked intelligence officer. Cunning, smart and smooth, he is capable of fanaticism and deep rage.
Walter Barnes:
50s, Caucasian man. American. Mentor to Jim Warnock at the CIA. Irish-Catholic—very smart, with a boisterous and brash sense of humor. A genial, blue-collar guy who you don’t want to cross.
Senator Jefferson Birch:
50s-60s, Caucasian man. American. A slick and smooth South Carolina politician. A bit of a blowhard who loves the sound of his own drawl. Intelligent and well-informed, capable of cutting speech when necessary.
