Breakdown
Kate Westmoreland: Caucasian female, 40-ish. A therapist. Strong-willed, opinionated, smart and sexual. Kate is the alpha-dog of the home. She is a good mother, juggling all aspects of her life until fate throws the Westmorelands an unexpected curve. Actress must be attractive but not a former beauty queen, and be able to handle comedy and intense drama equally.
Bobby Westmoreland: Caucasian male, 40-ish. A football coach. Easy-going and laidback, but strongly centered. His wife runs the house, and he enjoys letting her. He is a great father and husband and his family is his top priority. He is happy with the life he has built until tragedy calls the entire foundation into question. Actor must believably be a former football player still in good shape. The role requires easy comfort with comedy and honest and painfully raw emotion.
Dayne Westmoreland: Caucasian male, around 17, a senior in high school (actor should be 17-25 and be able to play 17). The best fullback to come out of Vicksburg, possibly the entire state of Mississippi. This kid is destined for football stardom until a life-threatening illness brings his perfect journey to a screeching halt. Dayne is compulsively neat, the perfect son, and manages to have a sense of self and humor throughout his difficult circumstances.
Gracie Westmoreland: Caucasian female, around 15 (actress should be 16-25 and be able to play 15). She thrives on drama and is a complete and utter little bitch. Gracie lives in the shadow of her perfect brother and will do anything to steal his thunder, mainly through negative reinforcement. She’s an actress who plans to be the next Meryl Streep. The character offers much of the comic relief in the play and must have impeccable comedic timing but needs to be able to hit real drama and emotion.
Sister Timothea Parker: Caucasian female in her 40’s. She is a conservative, crazy religious fundamentalist. Since her husband left her, she clings strongly to her Bible and believes that the temptations of the Devil are real and rampant. She wears her judgment on her sleeve, but believes in the literal healing powers of God’s word. She is very troubled by the fact that her son is gay and in musical theater, and worries over the Westmoreland’s influence in her son’s life. She embraces the theory, spare the rod, spoil the child.
Kendall Parker: Caucasian male, around 15 (actor should be 16-25 and be able to play 15). Kendall is effeminate, too pretty to be a boy, and wise beyond his years. Born “Mathew Mark,” he has literally created a new persona within the world of theatre – a means to survive outside of his fundamentalist, Pentecostal, abusive home. He is desperately in love with his best friend Gracie’s straight brother, Dayne. He is a musical theater geek, who can sing and dance.
