A deckhand, aged 55. A legend among Hull fisherman. A loose cannon, drunk, wild, violent, charming, irresistible. Claims to be Darrel’s father. (Also plays Darrel-Aged 54 in Act 3)
Darrel
In Act 1, a deckie learner, aged 17. In Act 2, a deckhand, aged 24. In Act 1, young and impressionable. In Act 2, a settled presence among the wild men at sea (he’s reading James Joyce while others are looking at pornography).
Norman
A deckhand, aged 28. Tightly wound, excitable, angry. The deckhand who is most negatively impacted by the harsh conditions at sea. Ends up suffering a breakdown. Needs to be significantly shorter than actor playing Roc.
Roc
A deckhand, aged 31. Tall (6’4’”). Good mates with Norman—and his emotional opposite. Strong, slower of thought, mild, quiet.
Bill
A deckhand, aged 55. An older presence—more settled in his ways. He spends his spare time at sea carving fishbones into delicate butterflies for his children.

The third hand, aged 36. Has an air of authority.
Pat
Cigarette smuggler, aged 29. Dangerous, shifty, a liar—all qualities driven by a nihilism from losing his place in the world. (Played by the same actor who plays Norman in Act 2).
