THE ALIENS

Author: Annie Baker

Director: Steve Stettler

LORT D Experimental Theater $453/week

1st rehearsal: 7/19/11. Runs: 8/11 - 8/28

Seeking:

KJ:

early 30s. A jobless college dropout (he was a double major in Math and Philosophy at UVM) who still lives with his New Age mom, KJ is vaguely Buddhist and regularly drinks cups of tea laced with psychedelic mushrooms. He has vague aspirations to be a songwriter (he sings and improvises songs throughout the play). He takes meds for a nervous condition, had a drinking problem and has back problems, and he exhibits bursts of improvisational, dancelike energy. Must be able to carry a tune and be comfortable singing.

Jasper:

early 30s. Self-described as “a living piece of trailer trash,” he is unemployed, bright but never attended college. More focused and driven than his friend KJ, Jasper simmers with a quiet rage. A chain smoker and admirer of the poet Charles Bukowski, he plays the guitar and is writing a Kerouac-style road novel. Must have basic guitar skills and be comfortable playing.

Evan:

18+ to play 17. A gawky, nerdy high schooler who has a summer job as a dishwasher in a Vermont coffee shop. Described as being “in a constant state of humiliation,” he has few friends, takes all things seriously, and is trying to revolt against his controlling mother. Must be able to carry a tune, have basic guitar skills, and be comfortable playing and singing.
