Story of Jamila, a 17-year-old Palestinian girl growing up in a Lebanese refugee camp with her family. As Jamila tries to escape the small and impoverished world she calls her home, she comes to discover that her greatest source of inspiration may also prove to be her biggest obstacle.
Seeking (all roles are available (i.e. not yet offered and accepted) unless otherwise specified):
NOTE: ALL characters in this play are Palestinian.
Jamila:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Seeking actress 18+ to play late teens. Palestinian girl. Whip-smart; both young and old for her age. Although she is a contemporary, modern teen, there’s still an element of"old country" in her personality. Seeking a versatile actress, with the ability to transition easily from a snarky teen to a young woman with the weight of the world on her shoulders. AVAILABLE ROLE. Palestinian woman, 40s–50’s. Adham’s wife, Jamila’s mother. Patient and understanding; solid foundation for her family in a world of constant flux. Fiery, intelligent and passionate when it comes to political discussion, but possesses a soft sense of humor that often serves to lighten the discourse. Ghassan:
AVAILABLE ROLE. Palestinian man, 50s. Abir’s brother. Like the rest of his family, he is deeply opinionated when it comes to politics — though most of his opinions manifest as conspiracy theories. A self-taught engineer, his breed of intelligence exists on a manual and practical level, as opposed to an intellectual one. AVAILABLE ROLE. Palestinian man, 20s. Jamila’s brother. Formerly an excellent student, Jul was beaten in a run-in with the army at age 17, leaving him mentally compromised and emotionally regressed. He is Jamila's confidant, and as such, can be quite playful. Knows that he is diminished in his capabilities and, though he spends little time dwelling on his misfortune, is still haunted by the knowledge of what he’s lost.
The following two roles are cast (i.e. offer accepted). Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary and/or as understudies.
Adham:
CAST. Palestinian man, late 40s–early 60s. Jamila’s father. Handsome. Intelligent. Withholding. A former academic, he has an air of refinement that sets him apart from the other men in the refugee camp. Has a strong love and high expectations for his children, but his pride and past experiences often make these emotions difficult to communicate.
Hamzi:
CAST. Palestinian man, mid 60s. Adham’s brother. Big, big man. Garrulous, and loves to hear himself talk. The big-mouthed uncle everyone loves. This is a role for a skilled actor able to capture Hamzi’s loud-mouthed, almost clownish sensibility, while also driving home the stark political realities inherent in his words.
