MEN

Mole

A mild-mannered dreamer who knows he is different from other moles—they are content to be solitary and alone, and he feels a longing to return to his childhood home and be part of a community. Although he is originally awed by the hustle and bustle of the riverbank, he is determined to finish his journey. He refuses to feel sorry for himself.

Water Rat

His boat is the most precious thing in the world to him. He is always ready to go someplace new, and learn something new—though he wants to stay near the river and other familiar boundaries and not have to venture into the Wide World. He’s sensitive, friendly, and drawn to things that are pleasurable, like food and sunshine, but also words—he’s a sea captain with the soul of a poet.  He’s also courageous, and a good friend.

Mr. Toad

Toad of Toad Hall. He was born into wealth and is able to indulge his obsessions with grown-up toys, like speed boats and, especially, sport cars. He’s spoiled and conceited, but also indomitable and cheerful—even when everyone around him knows that a crash is around the corner.

Dr. Badger

An intellectual who is given to pronouncements, rather than deep insights. Slow-moving. His life is spent surrounded by books. His home is cozy, warm, and inviting—but in his heart, he is ready for an adventure. He is the chief protector of the other animals.

Little Portly

Mrs. Otter’s son. He loves to eat and wants to be a chef when he grows up—putting different foods together is his way of being an artist. He knows his own mind. He’s rebelling against the family tradition of being a fisherman, but not rebelling against his family.

WOMEN

Mrs. Otter

She has a strong work ethic, but her view of the world is based on tradition—she prizes routine, rather than imagination.

Washer Woman

She is sensible, resourceful, kind, and impatient with any kind of self-indulgence. A member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, she helps Toad escape from prison and teaches him the importance of self-control.

MALE OR FEMALE

Head Weasel

The villain of the piece, he/she takes over Toad Hall. He/she is violent, greedy, and rapacious.

MEN

Dan/Don/Dave

20-early 30s

Note: Keep in mind that the actor who is right for Dan needs to be able to shift only slightly to give us Dave. He needs to be right for both roles not just one.  They are both real characters and not going to be differentiated by a big accent or shift, His shift in and out of the stutter should be seamless.

Dan is that guy who has a comic book collection, plays obscure video games and hunts down weird stuff on the internet for fun. He was the kid who had lizards and tarantulas instead of a dog. He’s sweet, not an Alpha. He’s had a crush on Rozie since the day they met, but never had the courage to act on it. Don is just a straightforward nurse. Dave is bright and articulate and probably too bright to be waiting tables at age 30 or so. The main difference between Dan and Dave (besides the stutter) is that Dave has a bit more worldly confidence, is more articulate, and maybe a touch more bitter.

Ambimbola

34-45.  Nigerian, a cab driver, Natalia’s husband. Ambimbola is dignity and kindness and strength. Ambimbola believes that when his son dies, God is going to take the moon down and put his glowing child in the sky. He also believes it is his destiny to win the lottery, however he is no fool.

Reed

56-65. Middle class, Catholic. A kind man of few words. A devoted father and husband with a quiet modest nature. He works as an engineer but is afraid of losing his job. His wife completely disconnected from him after their daughter died, but he has always excused that rather than confront her on the issue. His connection to the young prostitute is surprising even to him.

WOMEN

Rozie

22-25.  Rozie is a waitress and part-time escort. Foul-mouthed, brash, a bit white-trash yet honest and loyal to those she trusts. More character actress than ingénue.  Rozie’s true beauty and gift to the play is her complete and utter imperfection. She is more odd than angry.

Natalia

30s.  Romanian, Ambimbola’s wife. Deep, strong, courageous, maternal. Should have a good Romanian/Eastern European accent and excellent, easy comic timing. Natalia is an intuitive with a folk cure and a story for every occasion. She’s that person who sees right through to your core. Running behind her deep intelligence and command is a mother whose heart is breaking. She’s the kind of person you might have to earn a smile from, but when you do it’s the most warmth you have ever felt. There is a depth and stillness to her. She is love. The role needs a strong actress who can sit in a chair and captivate the room just by talking and being.

Helen

55-65.  Middle class, catholic.  A nurse. Hardened. After the death of her daughter, Helen cut herself off from everything. She is unable to get past her anger at the world. It’s made her rigid. A good but deeply wounded woman.
